Landmark Conference Set For Germantown Swim Center in Maryland

TOWSON, Maryland, October 1. Visit Montgomery welcomes the Landmark Conference to the Germantown Swim Center for its annual swimming & diving championships, which will occur on February 13-15, 2015. This will be the eighth year of Landmark Swimming & Diving Championships, however this is the first time the conference has hosted the event at a neutral site. The first four championships were hosted by the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and have been at Marywood University the last three years.

“The Germantown facility meets all of our needs. It’s a championship level facility with plenty of space to accommodate all of our athletes and fans,” said Paul Waas, head coach at Catholic University and chair of the Landmark Swimming & Diving Coaches. “As swimming and diving has grown in the Landmark Conference in recent years, it has become apparent that we’ve outgrown the facilities that hosted our conference meet in the past. Germantown is a pool that facilitates and encourages that growth to continue. I’m excited everyone who wants to come to the meet will be able to attend, and I look forward to the energy and enthusiasm a larger crowd will bring.”

The event is part of Visit Montgomery’s initiatives to bring new sporting events and increase occupancy on the weekends. “Weekend occupancy is usually softer in Montgomery County, so we are always looking for large events that generate room nights on Saturdays and Sundays,” said Kelly Groff, president and CEO of Visit Montgomery. “This is a new event which brings increased economic impact to hotels, restaurants and shops during a typical slow period in February.”

“We’re looking forward to hosting our Swimming & Diving Championships at the Germantown Swim Center,” said Dan Fisher, commissioner of the Landmark Conference. “Visit Montgomery made the decision to host our event at Germantown an easy one, and we’re appreciative of all of the support they have given us as we prepare for our annual championships in February. I think our student-athletes and fans will appreciate the efforts we’ve put into making this a first-class event.”

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men’s swimming & diving team has won all seven Landmark Championships including a 373 point victory in 2014. While The University of Scranton won the first three women’s titles, Susquehanna University has captured the last four. The 2015 event will feature nine women’s team and men’s teams with Elizabethtown College in its first year of Landmark competition.

The Landmark is working with Visit Montgomery and the Germantown Swim Center to coordinate the championship weekend. More information will be announced over the next several months leading up to the event.
