Laera Sets National Record, Cappa Cops Three on Day Two of Italian Champs

DESENZANO, Italy. Dec. 22. LUIS Alberto Laera set a national record in the men's 50 meter backstroke to highlight the second, and final, day of competition at the Italian Short Course Championships in Desenzano. Laera clocked 25.45 seconds for the two-lap sprint, erasing Emanuele Merisi's national mark of 25.54.

Alessandra Cappa, who set a national mark (28.83) in the women's 50m back on the first day of competition, was a triple winner tonight. Cappa took the 50m fly (27.84), 100m back (1:01.48) and 100m IM (1:04.43).

The only other multiple event winner was Federica Biscia, who breezed to victory in the women's 400m IM (4:46.20) and 200m breast (2:31.50).

Perhaps the best event of the day came in the men's 1500m freestyle, where Christian Minotti andd Simone Ercoli both dipped under the 15-minute barrier. Minotti won in a solid 14:53.98, three strokes ahead of Ercoli at 14:57.17.

In other highlights, Emanuele Merisi won the men's 200m back in 1:58.47 while Davide Cassol took the 200m IM in 1:59.96.
