Kylie Masse of Canada slipped past the long-standing 100 back world record in finals of the women’s 100 back. Masse had led the field throughout the prelims and semi-finals, flirting with the world record in semi-finals.

Her efforts came to fruition tonight as she posted a 58.10 to better the 2009 world record of 58.12. The record was posted at the 2009 World Championships during the super suit era by Great Britain’s Gemma Spofforth.

Comparative splits:

  • Masse (2017): 28.51, 29.59 = 58.10
  • Spofforth (2009): 28.71, 29.41 = 58.12

Her record doubles as a Canadian National Record and marks the first time since 1974 that a Canadian woman has held the 100 back world record. Wendy Cook previously held it in 1974, while Elaine Tanner lowered the world record twice in 1967.

Wait for the relay. I believe she’ll go under 58 now she finally has the record.
