Kieran Smith Tops Jake Magahey in 400 Freestyle at Atlanta Classic and Rematch of NCAA Duel

The final event of the second night of the Atlanta Classic featured a rematch from the NCAA Championships, as Kieran Smith and Jake Magahey squared off in the 400-meter freestyle. In March, at the NCAA Champs, it was Georgia’s Magahey who topped Smith of Florida in the final of the 500-yard freestyle. This time, in the long-course pool, it was Smith who emerged victorious.

Coming off a victory in the 200 freestyle, and a pair of 1:46 performances, Smith won the 400 free in 3:47.71, with Magahey following in 3:48.56. They were the only performers to go under 3:50 and will see each other again next month at the United States Olympic Trials. Smith will head to Omaha as the favorite in the 400 free, and among the top contenders in the 200 free.

In the men’s 200 breaststroke, Nic Fink complemented his win in the 100 breaststroke by prevailing in a time of 2:11.37, with Kevin Cordes (2:13.30) placing second. On the women’s side, Meghan Small earned a narrow triumph over Brynn Curtis, 2:28.66 to 2:28.77. Meanwhile, the 400 freestyle among the women went to Tylor Mathieu in 4:12.89.
