Keaton Blovad Wins Fifth Event, Scottsdale and Arizona Gold Win Team Titles at Austin Sectionals

AUSTIN – Tualatin Hills’ Keaton Blovad earned her fifth individual win of the meet, while the Scottsdale Aquatic Club women and Arizona Gold Swimming men won the team titles on the final night of racing at the Austin Sectionals meet at Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.

Blovad started off the final night of racing with her fifth win of the meet in the women’s 200 IM. She stopped the clock at 1:58.71 to win the race handily over Denver Swim Academy’s Morgan Rosas, who touched at 2:02.02. Blovad also won the 100 free, 200 free, 100 back and 100 breast in Austin. Alyssa Christianson of the Montrose Marlins tracked down third in 2:02.28.

Blovad’s teammate, Patrick Mulcare, posted his third victory over the past five days in the men’s 200 IM final, just missing his own sectional record of 1:46.51 with a 1:46.64. Arizona Gold’s Mark Jurek, who had four wins in Austin, took second in 1:47.86, followed by Phoenix Swim Club’s Matthew Anderson in 1:48.32.

After competing in the 1000 free on night one, RallySport Aquatic Club’s Christine Jennings flew out to Florida for the Crippen Cup 10K open water swim, then returned to Austin for the 1650 free. She didn’t seem too affected, posting the fastest time of the meet at 16:32.01. Phoenix Swim Club’s Matti Harrison moved up several spots from her seventh place seed with a 16:37.38, while Woodmore Waves’ Francesca Bains garnered third in 16:41.54.

Brooks Fail of the TJCC Stingrays earned a two-second victory over RallySport’s Yoelvis Pedraza in the men’s mile, 15:15.35 to 15:17.29. Arizona Gold’s Ben Olszewski claimed third with a 15:22.04.

Denver Swim Academy’s Ann Ochitwa got to the wall first in the women’s 50 free final with a swift 22.99, just off her prelims time of 22.94. Scottsdale’s Samantha Fazio finished right behind in 23.03, followed by Abigail Kochevar of the DU Hilltoppers at 23.15.

Liam Metzsch gave Tualatin Hills its third win of the night in the men’s 50 free final as he touched first in 20.42. Phoenix Swim Club grabbed the next two spots, with Matthew Anderson (20.80) and Grady Ottomeyer (20.98) touching second and third.

Tualatin Hills wrapped up the meet with a sweep of the 400 medley relays. Sara Metzsch, Keaton Blovad, Emily Cook and Ryan Falk topped the women’s race in 3:44.40, with Scottsdale’s Emma Broome, Alyson Yancy, Samantha Fazio and Victoria Toris in second at 3:45.79. The Tualatin Hills B squad of Cassidy Brennan, Tiffany Zhao, Megan Lam and Emily Cheng rounded out the top three in 3:46.53.

Sean Calkins, Anthony Nosack, Patrick Mulcare and Liam Metzsch gave Tualatin Hills a commanding win in the men’s relay with their 3:20.86. Phoenix Swim Club’s Jared Norton, Matthew Anderson, John Morgan and Grady Ottomeyer tied with Tucson Ford’s Matthew Lujan, Hunter Hojnacki, Steven Rothe and David Guyer as both teams posted matching 3:24.19s.

Scottsdale Aquatic Club took home the women’s team title with 699.5 points over Tualatin Hills (648 points). Denver Swim Academy came in third with 444.5 points. Arizona Gold captured the men’s team title with 550 points, with Tualatin Hills (462 points) and Phoenix Swim Club (434 points) in second and third.
