Katie Grimes, Leon Marchand Pop Strong Marks at TYR Pro Series in Mission Viejo

This month could prove to be a career-shaping period for Frenchman Leon Marchand, as the 20-year-old is positioned as a multi-event medal contender at the upcoming World Championships in Budapest. Whether the Arizona State standout reaches the podium in any of his events will be determined in a few weeks, but one thing is certain: Marchand looks sharp on his way to the Duna Arena.

Racing at the TYR Pro Series stop in Mission Viejo on Thursday night, Marchand put together an impressive showing in the 200-meter butterfly, winning the event in 1:56.54. Marchand’s time was a little more than two seconds quicker than the 1:58.70 of 17-year-old Ilya Kharun, who happens to be an Arizona State recruit. Colby Mefford was also under two minutes, going 1:59.98.

A finalist in the 400 individual medley at last summer’s Olympic Games in Tokyo, the French youngster has enjoyed a superb 2022 campaign. He first shined at the NCAA Championships, where he claimed titles in the 200 individual medley and 200 breaststroke. More, he has delivered several strong long-course performances, including his most-recent outing in the 200 butterfly.

In Mission Viejo, Marchand led from the start and continually built his advantage throughout the four laps. Marchand opened with a split of 26.54 and went through the midway point of the race in 56.42. Marchand was timed in 1:26.22 at the 150-meter mark and came home with a closing split of 30.32.

Olympian Katie Grimes delivered a promising effort in the 400 freestyle, covering her eight laps in 4:05.77 to finish ahead of Sandpipers teammate Bella Sims (4:07.54). Grimes will race multiple events at the World Championships, including the 1500 freestyle and 400 individual medley in the pool. She is also slated to contest the open-water 10K event. Grimes narrowly trailed Sims through 150 meters, but had the lead by the halfway point and pulled away over the final laps.

The men’s 100 freestyle featured a clash between former North Carolina State standouts Ryan Held and Justin Ress, with Held prevailing in 48.64. The 2016 Olympian went out in 23.02 and came home in 25.62 to beat Ress, who was also under the 49-second barrier with a swim of 48.90.

Southern Cal’s Kaitlyn Dobler registered a convincing win in the women’s 100 breaststroke, her time of 1:07.60 defeating the 1:09.38 of Turkey’s Viktoria Gunes. With the only time under 55 seconds, Poland’s Kasia Wasick claimed victory in the women’s 100 freestyle. Wasick touched in 54.57, followed by Sims in 55.18.

Complementing Marchand’s win in the men’s version of the event, another Sun Devil reigned in the women’s 200 butterfly, where Lindsay Looney turned in a time of 2:08.86 for a two-plus second decision over Justin Kozan (2:11.38).

Will Licon went 1:01.46 to finish first in the men’s 100 breaststroke and Egypt’s Marwan El Kamash was fastest in the men’s 400 freestyle behind a time of 3:51.12.
