Kate Douglass, CP-AC Women Break Eastern Zone Speedo Championship Series Records at Ithaca Sectionals

Kate Douglass stole the show on the opening night of the 2019 Eastern Zone Speedo Sectionals at Ithaca College – North Region. The seventeen-year-old from Chelsea Piers-Aquatic Club blasted a 1:45.16 opening leg of the 800 Freestyle Relay, breaking the Eastern Zone Speedo Championship Series Record set in 2006 by Julia Smit (1:46.14).

The swim was Douglass’ first best time in the event since 2017, when she posted a 1:48.10 at these same Sectionals. Douglass split the race 24.16 – 26.99 – 27.28 – 26.73. She will not compete in the individual 200 Freestyle at these championships.

She was joined by CP-AC teammates Maxine Parker (1:46.20), Sophia Moore (1:52.00) and Bridget Semenuk (1:49.04) to shatter the 800 Freestyle Relay Eastern Zone Record in 7:12.40. The previous mark was set by North Baltimore Aquatic Club in 2010.

The Crimson Aquatics squad of Anna Feng (1:50.49), Sadie Runeman (1:53.71), Mia Galat (1:52.34) and Molly Hanlin (1:50.46) took runner-up honors, while the CP-AC ‘B’ team of Elizabeth Boeckman (1:50.04), Emma Dantas (1:55.46), Lente Geelen (1:52.17) and Kelly Dolce (1:51.24) took third.

In the men’s race, their CP-AC teammates earned a silver medal with effort from Tyler Sicignano (1:41.71), Connor Martin (1:42.41), Spencer Erickson (1:42.60) and Benjamin Feldman (1:40.75). They were edged out by Thomas Minar (1:42.65), Edward Platonov (1:43.09), Jack Crocamo (1:42.97) and Arsenio Bustos (1:38.29) of the Woodbridge Aquatic Club 7:47.47 to 7:47.00.

Crimson Aquatics picked up another medal, this time from the team of John Zeiger (1:42.16), Tyler Knightly (1:42.94), Andrew Berzolla (1:43.22) and Brandon Musaku (1:42.07) in 6:50.39.


In the individual events of the evening, thirteen-year-old Mary McKenna of Long Island Express dropped ten seconds in the 1,650 Freestyle to narrowly edge out Orla Egan of the Laguardia Twisters. Egan dropped over nineteen seconds on her swim, as the girls came in at 16:36.26 and 16:36.95, respectively.

GRIT’s Tylor Mathieu also posted a lifetime best for third in 16:44.90. She was followed by PPSC’s Emily Ecker (16:50.15), Connecticut Aquatic Club’s Ella Dyjak (16:53.37), Kingfish’s Alexa Connors (16:58.89), Bulldogs’ Morgan Bagnall (17:08.70) and WW’s Emily Appleton (17:09.38).

In the men’s 1000 Freestyle, Ridgefield’s Connor Hunt (9:10.17) and New York Sharks’ Matthew Styczen (9:10.82) battled it out for first and second. Both sixteen years old, Hunt dropped over six seconds to earn the gold whole Styczen took off four. Charter Oak Aquatic Club’s Adam Zapatka was also in the mix with his fourteen-second best time of 9:11.60.

The New York Sharks also placed Joesph Hurle in the top eight with a time of 9:32.83. XCEL Aquatics did likewise with a 9:19.94 from Michael Krigeris and a 9:33.48 from Justin Tong. Also finishing among the top of the rankings were Three Village’s Brendan Williams (fifth – 9:23.69) and BB’s Colin Twiss (sixth – 9:32.71).
