Kansas vs. Nebraska

LAWRENCE, Kansas, January 15. KANSAS swimming and diving won 14-of-16 events as the Jayhawks defeated Nebraska, 180.5-114.5, Saturday in Devaney Natatorium. KU is now 7-5 in dual competition and 1-1 in the Big 12.

Senior Iuliia Kuzhil and freshman Alison Lusk both won two events in the Jayhaws' victory. Kuzhil, a senior from Cherkasy, Ukraine, won the 100-yard backstroke (56.91) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:03.87), while Lusk, a freshman from Chattanooga, Tenn., won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.68) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:19.76).

"We were very pleased with today's meet," Kansas head coach Clark Campbell said. "It came at the end of a very tough week, and our athletes performed well. Nebraska was ready for us, and we answered their challenge."

Other winners included sophomore Rebecca Swank, who won the 100-yard freestyle (10:13.56), junior Shannon Garlie, who took first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.02), sophomore Stephanie Payne, who was crowned champion of the 200-yard butterfly (2:02.93), and sophomore Monica Johannessen, who won the 100-yard freestyle (52.26). Freshman Malia Johnson who took first in the 500-yard freestyle with a career-best time of 4:57.79, while junior Abigail Anderson placed first in the 100-yard butterfly (56.87) and senior captain Joy Bunting won the 200-yard IM (2:05.42).

The Jayhawks will return to Lawrence on Jan. 22 to take on South Dakota and Northern Iowa at Robinson Natatorium. The meet is set to begin at 3 p.m. Due to the Kansas men's basketball team playing at the same time, parking lot 34, located behind the Computer Center on the corner of Sunnyside and Illinois St., will be reserved for the swim meet.
