Junior Pan Pacs – Day 3 Prelims: Erin Gemmell On Track For Triple; Thomas Heilman Chasing Another NAG Record

A pair of gold medals already in her possession, Erin Gemmell will try to complete her freestyle trifecta during the third night of finals at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Hawaii. During the Day Three prelims, Gemmell easily posted the fastest time in the 400-meter freestyle, an effort of 4:08.53. If Gemmell wins at night, she will complement earlier titles in the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle.

Gemmell was followed as the second seed by American teammate Jillian Cox, who clocked in at 4:10.83. The third spot went to Jamie Perkins of Australia in 4:11.68. Earlier this summer, Gemmell was victorious in the 400 freestyle at the United States Nationals, where she was timed in 4:06.17.

In the men’s 400 freestyle, the United States’ Alec Enyeart advanced as the top seed behind a swim of 3:51.44. He was followed in the second and third positions by Australian Joshua Staples (3:53.18) and American Rex Maurer (3:53.75).

The United States’ Alex Shackell and Japan’s Airi Mitsui will duel in the final of the women’s 100 butterfly, where Shackell qualified first in 58.56. Mitsui, the gold medalist in the 200 butterfly from the opening night of action, went 59.25 in the morning. The third seed is American Bailey Hartman (59.37).

The silver medalist in the 200 butterfly and 100 freestyle, Thomas Heilman is positioned for another podium chase. The 15-year-old clocked 52.75 in the 100 fly for the second-fastest time of the morning, trailing the 52.43 of Aussie Jesse Coleman. Heilman is pursuing the National Age Group (15-16) record in the event, which sits at 52.40. American Aaron Shackell, the winner of the 200 fly, advanced in the No. 3 spot in 53.96.

The Japanese tandem of Yuzuki Mizuno (2:10.04) and Mio Narita (2:10.79) led the way into the final of the women’s 200 backstroke, with Americans Maggie Wanezek (2:11.26) and Kennedy Noble (2:11.63) next. For the men, Japan’s Hidekazu Takehara was quickest in prelims in 1:58.39, followed by the United States’ Keaton Jones (1:58.75) and Josh Zuchowski (1:58.98). Daniel Diehl, the winner of the 100 backstroke, was fourth in 1:59.55, but he will be relegated to the B Final due to the two-per-nation rule used at the meet.
