2016 Olympian Jordan Wilimovsky was the highest finishing American in the 10K on Friday at the 2019 US Open Water Nationals in Miami as he punched his ticket for the 2019 World Championships later this summer in South Korea. Wilimovsky actually finished second overall behind 1500 free Olympic Champion Gregorio Paltrinieri of Italy and he said “it was sick” to race the Italian Olympic gold medalist in the 10K.

The top two finishers in the 10K at these Open Water Nationals will swim the event at the World Championships in July and the top ten finishers at the championships will automatically qualify for the Olympics next summer. Wilimovsky was the first American swimmer to qualify for the Olympics in both pool and open water when he made the team in the 1500 on the last day of the 2016 Olympic Trials.

Wilimovsky now has a chance to win a medal at World Championships this summer as he was one tenth away from winning the gold in the 10K at the 2017 World Championships.

Wilimovsky talked about his preparation for the Open Water Nationals and how much rest he would get for an event like this. He also discussed his World Championships schedule now that he has qualified to swim the 10K this summer. He qualified last year to swim both the 800 and 1500 in the pool. The open water events are held the week before the pool events at the World Championships and he said he plans on doing both events similar to what he did at the Olympics.
