Swim Ireland recently announced the appointment of Jon Rudd as the new National Performance Director who will lead Ireland’s High Performance Program throughout the next quadrennial. Rudd is slated to begin his new position in February 2017.

Rudd has been serving as the head coach of the Plymouth Leander Swimming Club since 1989 and the Director of Swimming at Plymouth College since 2006. Additionally, he has worked as the head coach of the Senior Great Britain and England swimming teams, along with the Lithuanian National Team.

Some of Rudd’s most accomplished swimmers include 2012 Olympic gold medalist and World Record holder Ruta Meilutyte and 2016 Olympic finalist Benjamin Proud.

The newly appointed National Performance Director explained to Sports News Ireland,

I am honoured to take on this role for Swim Ireland as it is an exciting opportunity for both them and I. I am obviously sad to be leaving something that I have created and built over what is almost three decades and it also hurts to be leaving behind such great athletes and a wonderful workforce. But Plymouth Leander is way bigger than any one man and my thoughts will soon be with my colleagues and athletes in Ireland, where I will now build a world class team around me that can help Ireland find that elusive podium finish at World and Olympic level.

Swim Ireland CEO Sarah Keane added,

I am really excited by the appointment of Jon. He is very driven and determined and I think that he will be a strong leader. Jon has the relevant skills and experience to be our National Performance Director and has the ambition to help us attain our vision.

With the new quadrennial underway, Swim Ireland has restructured some of their programs going forward, including setting a framework for success that is centered around the people located within the system — athletes, coaches, support staff, and administrators.

In addition to the appointment of Rudd as National Performance Director, Swim Ireland has begun the search for a Swim Ireland Head Coach, marking the first time that Swim Ireland will have both a National Performance Director and a Head Coach in place at the same time.
