Japan Open: Shiho Sakai Scorches 200 Back

TOKYO, Japan, June 5. THE second night of long course meter action at the Japan Open featured some more world-ranked times, including Shiho Sakai's splendid effort in the women's 200 back.

Sakai vaulted to third in the world in the women's 200 back with a 2:07.99. She became just the third swimmer to clear 2:08 this year behind Elizabeth Simmonds (2:06.79) and Belinda Hocking (2:07.89). Marie Kamimura touched second in 2:08.52 to grab sixth in the world rankings. Aya Terakawa posted a third-place 2:10.43, two seconds back of her seventh-ranked season-best time of 2:08.60 from April.

Ryosuke Irie nearly improved his top-ranked time in the world in the men's 200 back of 1:55.11 from February. Irie won the event tonight in 1:55.67, while Yuuki Shirai touched a distant second in 1:59.23. That time moved Shirai up to 22nd in the world. Kazuki Watanabe rounded out the top three in 1:59.42.

Miho Takahashi won the women's 400 IM in 4:41.86. That performance fell short of her 11th-ranked season-best time of 4:39.87 set in April at Japan Nationals. Miyu Ohtsuka finished second in 4:44.98, back from her 21st-ranked season best of 4:42.43, while Kyouka Suenaga claimed third in 4:45.45.

Yuuya Horihata, who is top ranked in the world with a 4:12.02 from April, captured the men's 400 IM title in 4:15.92. Daiya Seto placed second in 4:19.17 to move to 24th in the world this year, while Yousuke Mori wound up third in 4:19.21 to claim 25th in the world.

Yuka Kato, the seventh-ranked swimmer in the world with a 26.37 in the women's 50 fly, won tonight in 26.71. Rino Hosoda took second in 26.97, while Tomoyo Fukuda earned third in 27.12.

Kouhei Kawamoto moved into a 10th-place tie in the world rankings with a 23.85 in the men's 50 fly. He matched the time set by Brazil's Nicholas Santos in May. Ryo Takayusa finished second in 24.27, while Takayuki Ohno grabbed third in 24.28.

Sayuna Sugiyama tied for 16th in the world in the women's 50 breast with a 31.76 for the win. Her time matched the effort posted by China's Liu Xiaoyu in April. Kana Sugisaki took second in 31.94, while Nanaka Tamura placed third in 32.14.

Ryo Tateishi, the third-ranked swimmer in the world with a 27.62 in the men's 50 breast, cruised to victory in the sprint breast with a 27.89. Yuta Suenaga finished second in 28.12, back from his seventh-ranked season best 27.78. Hayato Saitou pocketed third in 28.35.

Sakiko Nakamura won the women's 400 free in 4:13.76, while Kazuki Wakanami placed just behind in 4:13.94. Yurie Yano wound up third in 4:16.33. Takeshi Matsuda put together an easy 3:50.12 to win the men's 400 free. Matsuda likely had more in the tank after moving to third in the world with a 3:46.59 in April. Syo Uchida picked up second in 3:53.99, while Yasunari Hirai snatched third in 3:54.16.

Haruka Ueda won the women's 100 free in 55.16, back from her 12th-ranked time of 54.87 from April. Hanae Ito finished second in 55.51, while Yayoi Matsumoto completed the podium in 55.56. Yoshihiro Okumura topped the men's 100 free in 49.86, while Takurou Fujii finished second in 50.17. Ranmaru Harada earned third in 50.18.
