Janet Hu, Justin Wright Honored as Pac-12 Swimmers of the Week

The Pac-12 conference has announced that Janet Hu of Stanford was named Pac-12 Women’s Swimmer of the Week, Arizona State’s Ashley McCool was voted Pac-12 Women’s Diver of the Week, Arizona’s Justin Wright was named Pac-12 Swimmer of the Week and Stanford’s Tarek Abdelghany was voted Pac-12 Men’s Diver of the Week.

Women’s Swimmer of the Week: Janet Hu, SR, Stanford (Vienna, Va.)
Hu won seven events (four individual events and three relays) and set an Avery Aquatic Center record to help lead then-No. 3 Stanford to two Pac-12 dual victories. Hu’s four individual wins were in four different events and three different strokes. She won all four of her races in a 176-113 win over Arizona State on Saturday as she broke a two-year-old pool record in the 200 back (1:53.18), then won the 100 fly and helped Stanford to victories in both relays. A day prior, she helped the Cardinal defeat then-No. 20 Arizona (192-100) with a first-place finish in both of her individual races (100 back and 50 free) and the 400 free relay. Her time of 22.09 in the 50 free was just two hundredths from the pool record held by Olympic gold medalist Simone Manuel.

Women’s Diver of the Week: Ashley McCool, FR, Arizona State (Tinley Park, Ill.)
McCool won three of four events on the weekend at then-No. 5 Cal and then-No. 3 Stanford. She set a new school record in the 3-meter on Friday (359.48) and re-set her own record on Saturday (362.20), garnering first place in both competitions. She also broke the five year-old 3-meter Arizona State record and set a new Stanford pool record in the 3-meter on Saturday. Her last first place finish came against Stanford in the 1-meter (316.35). She also placed second in the event against California (307.65).

Men’s Swimmer of the Week: Justin Wright, Sr., Arizona (Fresno, Calif.)
Wright competed in four events last week in No. 16 Arizona’s dual meets against No. 1 California (99-194) and No. 5 Stanford (123-165). Opening the weekend, Wright took first in the 200-yard butterfly breaststroke (1:45.80) in the meet against Stanford and also finished second in the 100-yard butterfly breaststroke (48.61). The returning 200 fly All-American swept both races against the top-ranked Cal team, coming in first in the 200 (1:44.70) and 100 (48.11) fly.

Diver of the Week: Tarek Abdelghany, Sr., Stanford (Ladera Ranch, Calif.
Abdelghany collects his second-straight Pac-12 Diver of the Week award winning two-of-four events last weekend, adding two runner-up finishes. He helped an undefeated No. 5 Stanford team beat No. 16 Arizona (194-99) and No. 10 Arizona State (184-101). Abdelghany swept the 3-meter springboard event across the two days, finishing with 389.10 points on Friday and 383.70 points on Saturday. In the 1-meter, he came in second versus the Wildcats (304.95) and Sun Devils (334.28) behind teammate Ted Miclau.
