James Sica has been named as the MIT swimming and diving assistant coach and communications, promotions and marketing assistant. Sica comes to MIT from Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.).

“I could not be more excited to have James join the MIT swimming and diving family,” said Dani Korman. Mary Frances Wagley `47 head coach. “He stood out from the beginning of the process from his work experience, coaching success and emphasis on the student-athlete experience. Once the team met him we knew instantly he would be a perfect fit for our program. I am confident James will be a valuable asset for MIT in and out of the pool.”

Sica served as an assistant coach at Carnegie Mellon for the past two seasons, helping guide a number of student-athletes to NCAA Championship appearances and All-America honors. Prior to his time with the Tartans, Sica was a volunteer assistant coach at nearby Harvard University, as well as the associate head coach of the Cambridge Master’s Swim Club.

“I am very excited to have James join us here at MIT,” said Ken Johnson, Jr., Director of Communications, Promotions and Marketing. “He has clear experience as a swimming coach and a student-athlete, as well as the skills as a writer and other communication areas that will make him a strong asset to our office.”

Sica also coached at Ithaca College (N.Y.) for two seasons while completing his Master’s degree in sport and exercise with a concentration in sport psychology in 2014. A 2012 undergraduate from Ithaca with degree in writing and English, he was also a member of the Bombers swimming team who was voted as the team captain as a senior. As a swimming, Sica competed in the breaststroke, IM and distance freestyle events.
