Italian and German Teams Win World Junior Open Water Relay Titles

On the final day of the 2016 World Junior Open Water Championships in Hoorn, Netherlands, teams competed in the 14-16 and Under 19 4×1.25K relay.

In the 14-16 relay, the top four teams finished under an hour, though the medal earning squads all finished in close succession. Claiming gold was Italy’s Emanuele RussoAndrea FiladelliLudovica Lugli, and Giulia Berton in 58:06.4. Berton was runner up in her individual 5K on Saturday.

Not even three seconds behind in 58:09.1 were Akos KalmarZoltan TabiJanka Juhasz, and Fanni Kun-Szabo of Hungary.

Great Britain’s Hector PardoePhoebe GriffithsNathan Hughes, and Leah Crisp completed the podium in 58:12.6. Parode was also third place in his 5K earlier this weekend.

The times in the Under 19 relay were significantly faster with 17 of the 20 teams finishing under an hour. Germany finished just a second ahead of Italy to win the event. Paul HentschelLea BoyThore Bermel, and Jeanette Spiwoks combined for a 56:06.2. Nicola RobertoAndrea ManziAlisia Tettamanzi, and Sophie Cavagnola posted a 56:07.4 for second.

France’s Fares ZitouniOceane CassignolLisa Pou, and Logan Fontaine swam a 56:19.8 for third place. Fontaine was the individual 7.5K champion and Cassignol finished second in Sunday’s women’s 7.5K race.

The gold medal wealth was well spread this weekend, with no nation winning more than one event. In the 5Ks, gold went to swimmers from Russia and China while the 7.5Ks were won by French and Spanish swimmers. Yesterday’s 10K victories went to British and Hungarian competitors and the Italians and the Germans found their way to the top of the podium today.
