ISL Match Four Day Two: Condors Soaring & Flying to Second Win

The second day of the fourth match of the International Swimming League kicked off with the Cali Condors holding a comfortable lead over the New York Breakers with Team Iron and the DC Trident in pursuit.

Team Iron turned up the heat and passed the Breakers to finish second overall thanks to wins from Ranomi KromowidjojoNicholas Santos and Emre Sakci, as the latter won the Skins race to close out the meet.

The Condors showcased their impressive depth as they seemingly do not have a weak spot, with a Skins win from Olivia Smoliga and a continued unbeaten streak of Lilly King.

Match 5 will get underway October 30 at 3 p.m. local Budapest time with the London Roar, DC Trident, LA Current and Tokyo Frog Kings.

Women’s 100 Free

ISL record: 51.02, Cate Campbell, Emma McKeon, London Roar

Team Iron’s Ranomi Kromowidjojo got the day started with a 51.73 in the 100 freestyle from lane one as she helped score 10 points for her team. Kasia Wasick of the Breakers was second ahead of Natalie Hinds of the Condors.

Men’s 100 Free

ISL record: 45.22, Caeleb Dressel, Cali Condors

DC’s Zach Apple scored a minor upset in the 100 free with a 45.94 taking down Caeleb Dressel and Kacper Majchrzak of the Cali Condors. Apple already had the fastest time in the league this season in the 100 free, but this is the first time he has beaten Dressel head to head in the ISL. Apple’s best this season is a 45.74 and he has been clutch on relays for the Trident this season. His long course success the last few years reminds swimming fans that his performances in the ISL should not be that surprising.

Women’s 200 Fly

ISL record: 2:03.12, Suzuka Hasegawa, Tokyo Frog Kings

Hali Flickinger of the Cali Condors got the first win of the day for the Birds with a 2:04.34 in the 200 fly, leading wire to wire. It was her first match-up with World champ Boglarka Kapas since the Hungarian upset her at the 2019 Worlds, as Kapas finished in fourth for the Breakers. Svetlana Chimrova finished in second for New York, holding off a hard charging Katinka Hosszu of Team Iron.

Men’s 200 Fly

ISL record: 1:48.77, Daiya Seto, Energy Standard

Eddie Wang of the Cali Condors blitzed the field with a 1:51.32 in the 200 fly, pulling away from the European rivals Ramon Klenz (Iron) and Michal Poprawa (Breakers). It was the first win for the Taiwanese swimmer in the ISL as he sits third in the ISL rankings this season and has been huge for the Condors in his first year.

Women’s 100 Back

ISL record: 54.89, Minna Atherton, London Roar

Olivia Smoliga of the Cali Condors swam a 56.23 in the 100 back to go 1-2 with Beata Nelson as they will return later in the session with the backstroke Skins event. She took jackpot points from the bottom three swimmers as New York’s Alicja Tchorz finished in third to keep the Breakers in second place overall.

Men’s 100 Back

ISL record: 49.50, Guilherme Guido, London Roar

The DC Trident made their presence known with Jacob Pebley taking the 100 back at the wall with a 50.51 in a wild finish that saw Iron’s Guilherme Basseto finishing in second and a three-way tie for third. DC’s Mark Nikolaev, and Cali’s Radoslaw Kawecki and Coleman Stewart all touched the wall simultaneously.

Women’s 100 IM

ISL record: 57.74, Sarah Sjostrom, Energy Standard

Melanie Margalis used a strong back half to take the 100 IM win with a 57.94 for the Cali Condors in a 1-3 finish with rookie Meghan Small. Second place went to the Brit Abbie Wood of the Breakers who has had a very successful ISL season thus far. Margalis jackpotted the seventh and eighth place finishers.

Men’s 100 IM

ISL record: 51.36, Caeleb Dressel, Cali Condors

Caeleb Dressel took down the first ISL record of the day with a 51.27 in the 100 IM as he proved why he is the top sprinter in the world. New York’s Michael Andrew kept the team in second place with his runner-up finish with Iron’s Marco Orsi placing third, just ahead of Cali’s Marcin Cieslak. Dressel jackpotted seventh and eighth place with his win.

Women’s 200 Free

ISL record: 1:51.67, Siobhan Haughey, Energy Standard

Allison Schmitt kept the ball rolling for the Condors with a 1:54.41 in the 200 freestyle, holding off a late charge from teammate Hali Flickinger as they finished 1-2. Iron’s Veronika Andrusenko finished in third to help keep the team close with the Breakers with ten events remaining.

Men’s 200 Free

ISL record: 1:41.58, Alexander Graham, London Roar

Townley Haas grabbed the win in the 200 free for the Condors with a 1:42.57, out-splitting Iron’s Leonardo Santos on the final 50. DC’s Zach Apple seemingly negative split his swim as he charged home to finish in third place.

Women’s 50 Fly

ISL record: 24.74, Ranomi Kromowidjojo, Team Iron

Ranomi Kromowidjojo and Melanie Henique swam a much needed 1-2 in the 50 fly with Kromowidjojo taking the win at 24.80, jackpotting eighth place as te Iron sit tied for second with the Breakers. New York’s Arina Surkova finished in third but the pressure is now on.

Men’s 50 Fly

ISL record: 21.96, Szebasztian Szabo, Aqua Centurions

Nicholas Santos achieved six extra points in the 50 fly with a 22.30 out in lane one as he took down Cali’s Caeleb Dressel and propelled Iron to second place in the standings. New York’s Joe Litchfield placed third as sixth, seventh and eighth were jackpotted.

Women’s 100 Breast

ISL record: 1:03.00, Lilly King, Cali Condors

Lilly King of the Cali Condors remained unbeaten as she swam a 1:03.61 to go 1-2 with teammate Molly Hannis. King was able to steal a point away from eighth place as her day is now over. Iron’s Ida Hulkko finished in third to keep the momentum going for the Budapest-based team.

Men’s 100 Breast

ISL record: 55.92, Adam Peaty, London Roar

Iron’s Emre Sakci held on the 100 breast with a 57.17 for the win ahead of New York’s Marco Koch as the momentum keeps going for the Iron who are comfortably in second place in the team standings. DC’s Thomas Cope finished in third as Sakci stole points from the bottom four swimmers.

Mixed 4×100 Free Relay

ISL record: 3:15.97, Energy Standard

The DC Trident led wire to wire out in lane eight with the team of Zach AppleJacob PebleyMargo Geer and Ting Quah taking it at 3:17.60 with the Condors in second and Team Iron in third.

Women’s 400 IM

ISL record: 4:24.15, Melanie Margalis, Cali Condors

Abbie Wood of the New York Breakers put the hammer down on the breaststroke leg to gather some momentum for her team with a 4:28.20. She held off a hard charging Hali Flickinger of the Cali Condors with Bailey Andison of the DC Trident slipping in ahead of Iron’s Katinka Hosszu.

Men’s 400 IM

ISL record: 3:54.81, Daiya Seto, Energy Standard

David Verraszto took advantage of the Hungarian soil with a 4:03.52 in the 400 IM as he was in a good race with New York’s Brandonn Almeida who finished in second. DC kept themselves alive with Abrahm DeVine placing third out in lane seven.

Women’s SKINS Backstroke

Olivia Smoliga won each round of the Skins backstroke event as she led a 1-2 finish with Beata Nelson of the Condors. The Breakers picked up big points with Alicja Tchorz advancing to round two.

Iron solidified second place with Emre Sakci sweeping all three rounds of the 50 breast Skins, playing to their advantage after they won the men’s medley relay and selected breaststroke for Sakci.
