INTERNATIONAL SWIMMING HALL OF FAME

ENSHRINEMENT WEEKEND

FORT LAUDERDALE – The International Swimming Hall of Fame (ISHOF), recognized by FINA, the international governing body for the Olympic aquatic sports, today announced the new dates for ISHOF‘s 52nd Annual Honors Weekend, October 28-30, 2016 in Santa Clara, California. More:

Quentin Muffat (pictured with ISHOF’s Ivonne Schmid), brother of Camille Muffat (FRA), recently visited ISHOF to donate memorabilia of his sister to the museum. Camille won three medals at the London Olympics, including gold in the 400m freestyle. She will be inducted posthumously into the ISHOF in October. Quentin currently studies and swims for NOVA Southeastern University.

Hall of Famer Janet Evans has officially joined the LA 2024 bid committee.

As vice chair in charge of giving athletes a voice in the proposal, Janet came to ISHOF to meet and talk to local Olympians about their past experiences and their suggestions for making the 2024 Olympic Games in Los Angeles a success.

Among the US Olympian attendees were swimmers Gary Hall Sr., Jesse Vassallo, Tiffany Cohen, Dick Hanley and Olympic Diving Coach Tim O’Brien.

Obituary: Archie Harris

NORMAL (IL) – Archie Harris, 92, died Monday (April 11, 2016) with family at his side in a Willowbrook memory care home.

Archie had a wonderful career and passion for swimming. Generations of college swimmers will remember Archie Harris. For almost fifty years, he ran the “50 50s” during the Christmas CSCAA College Swim Forum, at the Hall of Fame Pool. The longtime swim coach at Illinois State was a great supporter and volunteer for ISHOF, the YMCA, Red Cross and all things aquatic. More:

New Aquisitions – Flip Darr’s Prototypes

Original prototypes of Honor Coach Flip Darr’s hand-paddles – donated by Miriam Darr. Flip started to develop and use the hand paddles in 1966 or 67. The first designs were made of aluminum with surgical tubing bands. The next paddles, introduced around 1968, pictured in the little brochure, were made of plastic and shaped and sanded in his kitchen. When he couldn’t supply the demand, Hall of Famer Gary Hall’s brother, Ron, manufactured them in his parent’s garage.

Publications

Dr. Stathis Avramidis “A Chance for Children“ inspired by the life of Greg Bonann, Gold Medallion recipient and Creator of Baywatch. Funded by the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation and endorsed by 18 organizations including ISHOF, the story forms a water safety program for 500,000 primary school Greek children and millions internationally.

Casey Keiber (pictured on left with ISHOF Honor Masters Swimmer Karlyn Pipes) has joined ISHOF’s staff as Director of Development and Special Projects. Casey swam at Penn State and is an active masters swimmer.
