Isabella Arcila Doubles, SMU Swims Past Rice

MANSFIELD – Isabella Arcila won two individual events and swam on a winning relay to lead the SMU women’s swimming and diving team to a 142-89 dual meet win over Rice on Friday night. Casey Clark and Erin Flanigan each won two events for the Owls.

The 11th-ranked SMU women’s swimming and diving team won nine events en route to a 142-89 dual meet victory over Rice on Friday evening at the Mansfield Natatorium. It was the first meet for the Mustangs since they were honored as the No. 11 team in the CSCAA Poll on Oct. 23.

In relay action, the Ponies kicked off the night and closed action with victories in the 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays, respectively. Seniors Isabella Arcila and Nicole Parmenter and sophomores Tara-Lynn Nicholas and Marne Erasmus paced the 200-medley relay with a time of 1:45.54, while Erasmus, senior Nathalie Lindborg, sophomore Ursa Bezan and freshman Adrienn Santa clocked a 3:27.86 to win the 400-free relay. SMU was also second in the 200 event with seniors Anna Volchkov and Rachel Nicol, junior Tiffany Sudarma and freshman Kyra Kondis posting a 1:47.55

Senior Isabella Arcila posted a pair of individual victories in the 50-yard freestyle (23.47) and the 100-yard backstroke (56.82). In the 50-free SMU also occupied the runner-up position with Nathalie Lindborg touching in 24.21. Senior Eleonor Lindborg and Volchkov also scored in the 100-back placing fourth and fifth, respectively.

Sophomores Kirsty McLauchlan and Marne Erasmus also registered first-place points for the Mustangs in the 400-yard individual medley (4:26.31) and 100-yard butterfly (55.47), respectively.

In diving action, freshman Madeline Wainman swept the one- and three-meter events posting a 239.69 in one-meter and 321.98 in three-meter. Sophomore Lauren Lamb finished second in both events to earn valuable points toward the team score.

Nicol earned SMU’s final top spot as part of a one-two finish with Nicholas in the 100-yard breaststroke. Nicol clocked in at 1:03.14, while Nicholas finished in 1:03.70. McLauchlan and senior Erica Donadon also finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the event.

The Mustangs had three student-athletes score in the 200-yard freestyle with Santa (second), Eleonor Lindborg (fourth) and Nicol (fifth) scoring. In both the 100- and 500-freestyles SMU went two-three with Nathalie Lindborg and Santa competing in the 100 and Bezan and McLauchlan in the 500.

Bezan also posted a second-place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle in a time of 10:21.61.

The Mustangs are back in action on Saturday when they host American Athletic Conference opponent Houston at the Mansfield Natatorium. Meet starts at 1 p.m. CT with live results available on Meet Mobile.

Rice seniors Erin Flanigan and Casey Clark both won a pair of events, but the 11th ranked SMU swim team claimed a 142-89 dual meet victory over the Owls Friday evening at the MISD Natatorium in Mansfield, Texas.
SMU won seven of the meet’s 11 swim events. The Mustangs also added 26 more points from two springboard diving events.

The Clark & Flanigan duo paced the Blue & Gray. Both posted a pair of individual season-best marks in two events each that are also best times so far in Conference USA. Flanigan swept both distance races with a 4:55.96 in the 500-yard freestyle and a 10:08.03 in the 1,000. Clark followed a victory in the 200-freestyle (1:51.14) with a steady 51.01 in the 100.

True freshman Kaitlyn Swinney had a solid 4:26.87 to finish second by a half-second in the 400-individual medley. Senior Madison Livingston was third in the Owls’ first time to compete in the 400-IM this year.

Freshman Kiley Beall was second in the 100-butterfly with a 56.47. The mark is the fastest by an Owl this year and second-best time so far in the conference. Junior Taylor Armstrong scored for Rice with a second place in the 100-backstroke (59.11).

Rice also raced for the first time in the 400-free relay. A foursome of Cora McKenzie, Casey Clark, Marissa Konicke and Hannah Deters placed second with a 3:32.47.

The Owls have one more meet on schedule for the weekend road swing. Rice next competes at Conference USA foe North Texas on Saturday. The 16-event contest is set for 11 am in Denton, Texas.
