Iowa v. Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota. November 7. THE No. 10 Minnesota men's swimming and diving team defeated Iowa, 195-92. The Gophers dominated the meet, winning all 16 events to improve to 2-0 on the season. Kevin Baseheart, Ray Betuzzi, Drew Brown and Ivan Gutesa won multiple events for Minnesota.

The Gophers opened a quick lead with an easy win in the 200 medley relay. Karl Burdis, Colin Lee-To, Anthony Portela and Michael Richards cruised to the win in 1:29.53. The Gopher B team of Dominique Massie-Martel, Jon Roberts, Kevin Baseheart and Steve Miller took second in 1:32.60.

Mike Holmes torched the field in the 1000 freestyle, posting a win by over 11 seconds. His winning time was 9:17.70. A solid race was waged for second place between Minnesota's Michael Daup and Nico Zebley and Iowa's Ryan Evans. Daup made a late push to edge Zebley for second in 9:29.19. Zebley was just . 28 seconds back in 9:29.47.

The Gophers posted big team points with a 1-2-3 finish in the 200 freestyle. Ray Betuzzi broke away early in the 200 freestyle and held on for the win in 1:39:38. Alex Wold was a close second in 1:39.82 and Jake Kittilstad was third in 1:42.24.

The home crowd got its first look at Burdis in an individual event when he cruised to a win in the 100 backstroke with a time of 50.44. Curt Carlson took second in 51.03. Minnesota went 1-2 again in the 100 breaststroke as Ivan Gutesa surged to a win in 56.65. Jon Roberts placed second in 57.32 and Mark Solfelt was third in 58.42.

Sophomore Kevin Baseheart had a strong swim in the 200 butterfly to breeze to a victory. He clocked a time of 1:50.15. Minnesota's Adam Weis took second in 1:53.99.

The Gophers had four compete in the 50 free. Richards won in 20.45, followed by Miller in 20.89. Massie-Martel (21.69) and Betuzzi also competed and had times of 21.69 and 21.74. Carlson continued Minnesota's win streak with a win in the 100 free (44.14), while Keith Yoho won the 200 back (1:51.70). Carlson lowered his career-best in the 100 free by over .20 seconds.

Gutesa, Betuzzi and Baseheart each won another event for the Gophers. Gutesa won the 200 breast (2:03.07) for his second win of the evening. Betuzzi won the 500 free (4:30.23), while Baseheart won the 100 fly (49.47). Alex Wold finished the individual events with a win in the 200 IM in 1:52.99.

Drew Brown won both the 1-meter and the 3-meter boards for the Gophers. Brown held the event's best score of 318.45, while posting a win in the 3-meter of 371.25. Both scores were career-highs for the Centennial, Colo. native who has won three of his last four events. His 3-meter scor e of 371.25 is the fourth-best in school history. On the 3-meter, Cole Young took second with a strong tally of 357.00 and Tyler Jepsen was fourth (249.60). On the 1-meter Jepsen placed fourth (245.78), while Young finished fifth (242.63).

The Gophers concluded the meet with a win in the 200 free relay. Lee-To, Richards, Carlson and Miller combined for a winning time of 1:20.11.

The No. 12 Minnesota women's swimming and diving team defeated Iowa, 185.5-110.5. The Gophers won 12 of 16 events to improve to 4-0 on the season.

The Gophers immediately jumped out to a lead, winning the 200 medley relay team of Jenna Lennertz, Jillian Tyler, Kaylee Jamison and Stacy Busack won easily in a time of 1:41.98. The Gophers B team of Deidre DeWall, Kimberly Kazika, Megan Braun and Meredith McCarthy also finished third in 1:45.83.

Freshman Lissa Tommerdahl took first in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 1:04.11 and freshman Marissa Davies in second with a time of 10:06.73.

In the 200 free, it was a 1-2-3 Gopher finish with Hannah Whitehead touching first in 1:51.31 while Christine Jennings and Stacy Busack tying for second with times of 1:51.48.

In the 100 backstroke, Iowa picked up its first event win when Daniela Cubelic took first in 56.72. Deidre DeWall was second in 56.87 and Jenny Shaughnessy placed third in 57.43. Minnesota continued to dominate the meet, posting a 1-2 finish in the 100 breaststroke. Sophomore Kaylee Jamison took first with a time of 1:04.40 and junior Kazika was second in 1:05.75.

Kait Strickland came on late to steal a win in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:05.13 to edge Iowa's Laura Mozdzen, who took second in 2:05.55. Senior Yuen Kobayashi placed third in a time of 2:05.64.

Minnesota took the top two spots in the 50 free. McCarthy won the event in 23.76, while Meagan Radecke finished second in 23.93. Erin Holtmeyer placed fourth overall in 24.44. Iowa won the 100 free, while Minnesota's Alison Eggers and Yuen Kobayashi placed second and third in the stroke (51.81 and 51.97).

Shaughnessy got the Gophers back on track with a win in the 200 back (2:01.17). Cory Miller (2:06.00) and Castina Wabeke (2:07.09) placed third and fourth overall. Minnesota went 1-2-3-4 in the 200 breaststroke tonight. Kazika won it in 2:22.38, followed by Avery Michienzi (2:25.90) and Corina Hopkins-Vacca (2:25.92). Although she didn't garner any of the Gopher points, Andrea Hanson placed fourth in 2:26.06.

Ashley Steenvoorden took home the 500 free win when she clocked a time of 4:54.77, while Whitehead finished second in 4:56.27. DeWall won the 100 fly (56.10), while Tyler won the last individual event of the night in the 200 IM (2:03.61).

Minnesota closed out the meet with a win in the 200 free relay. Busack, McCarthy, Radecke and Eggers combined for a time of 1:33.77.

In diving action, Taylor Enerson was the lone Gopher to compete in both boards. Enerson finished fourth overall in the 3-meter (207.53) and fourth in the 1-meter (227.85). Maggie Thomas finished third in the 3-meter (22.7.43), while Emma Shankland held a score of 192.30 for fifth.
