The Iowa State women’s swimming and diving team hosted the University of Iowa for their annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series dual meet. In last year’s edition of the meet, the Iowa Hawkeyes emerged victories by winning 14 out of 16 total events and scoring 197 points, while Iowa State scored 101 points.

This year the margin was much smaller with Iowa scoring 159.5 points to Iowa State’s score of 121.5. This marks Iowa’s eighth straight victory at this annual dual meet.

The action in Ames started with the 200 medley relay where the Hawkeyes and Cyclones came in just .14 apart. Iowa’s foursome ultimately took the win with a time of 1:42.06 while Iowa State touched second in 1:42.20.

The Cyclones were able to produce a 1-2 finish in the 1,000 freestyle with the duo of Keely Soellner and Haley Ruegemer who each turned in 10:08.04 and 10:14.77, respectively.

Iowa’s Hannah Burvill stole the pool record in the 200 freestyle from Iowa State’s Karyl Clarete with a 1:47.91, which dipped under the Clarete’s old mark of 1:48.38, posted in 2013. Second place in the event went to Iowa State’s Silqi Luo who swam a 1:50.03.

Iowa State freshman Martha Haas was able to hold off Iowa senior Shea Hoyt in the 100 breaststroke by posting a 1:02.64 to Hoyt’s 1:02.94. Hoyt did earn redemption in the 200 breaststroke by winning the event in a time of 2:14.22.

Hawkeye freshman Kelsey Drake swam her way to a victory in the 200 yard butterfly. Drake’s 1:59.99 dips just under the 2:00 barrier and put her just ahead of fellow Hawkeye Tereysa Lehnertz who turned in a 2:01.49. Iowa State’s Mary Kate Luddy was third in the event tonight with a 2:01.81. Drake earned herself her second victory of the night in the 200 IM with a time of 2:02.46 with Ruegemer touching second in 2:05.20.

Another pool record was marked tonight with Iowa State’s Laura Miksch matching the old record with a 23.06 in the 50 freestyle. Miksch won the race with Iowa’s Mekenna Scheitlin right behind in 23.28 while freshman Hawkeye Sarah Schemmel touched third in 23.77.
