Indiana, Virginia vs. Penn State, Day Two

STATE COLLEGE, Pennsylvania, November 19. THE Indiana men's swimming and diving team came up with a pair of dual meet victories this weekend, defeating Penn State 226-127, and Virginia (217-136) in State College, Pa. Indiana is now 4-2 on the season.
Indiana opened with a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay as James Wells, Cody Miller, Steve Schmuhl and Daniel Kanorr finished in 1:29.69, an NCAA B cut. The Hoosier B team of Adam Twer, Mike Hurley, Tyler Shedron and Alex Kotliarsky finished sixth (1:35.63).

Ryan Hinshaw paced the way for Indiana in the 1,000 freestyle, taking third in 9:17.37. Andrew Taylor was fourth (9:21.18) and Alex Kotliarsky sixth (9:25.07).

Kanorr was the first Hoosier winner on the day, clocking a 20.78 in the 50 freestyle, Jim Barbiere was third (21.02) and John Schnittker seventh (21.66).

Wells picked up his first win of the season in the 100 backstroke, touching the wall in. 48.75. Schmuhl was third (50.75) and Twer 11th (53.66). Miller came up 7/100ths of a second short in the 200 breaststroke race, taking second in 2:02.56. Sam Trahin was fifth (2:05.25) and Nicholas Schwab seventh (2:05.62).

Schmuhl was the second-place finisher in the 200-yard butterfly (49.50), followed by Shedron in fifth (50.97) and Joe Powell in 10th (52.56).

Barbiere added to the Hoosiers' winners tally with a victory in the 200 freestyle (1:38.85). Taylor was fifth (1:41.96) and Schnittker seventh (1:42.47).

Trahin was also a first-time winner on Saturday with a time of 3:56.79 in the 400 individual medley. Shedron was fifth (3:59.89) and Schwab 10th (4:05.12).

Indiana finished the swimming portion of the meet with a third-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay as Barbiere, Kanorr, Gerth and Miller went 3:03.43. Right behind in fourth place were Shedron, Schnittker, Taylor and Hurley (3:07.89).

In diving competition, Zac Nees was a double winner on the weekend, taking the 1-meter springboard with 384.40 points. That led a 1-2-3 sweep for IU with Darian Schmidt second (331.45) and Bryce Ogden third (309.70).

The Indiana women's swimming and diving team went 1-1 on the weekend, defeating Penn State 191-162, and falling to Virginia 212.5-140.5 in State College, Pa. The Hoosiers are now 3-3 for the season.

The Hoosiers opened the second day of competition with a third-place finish in the 200 medley relay as Taylor Wohrley, Ashley Specht, Stephanie Armstrong and Margaux Farrell combined for a time of 1:44.02. The team of Cynthia Pammett, Bronwyn Pasloski, Kim Tracey and Justine Ress took sixth (1:45.85).

Lindsay Vrooman matched yesterday's second-place finish in the 500 free with a second-place showing in the 1,000 free, clocking in at 9:59.43. Lauren Jordan was fifth (10:15.83) and Courey Schaefer sixth (10:17.26).

Farrell was the top Hoosier in the 50 freestyle, finishing fourth in 23.61. Armstrong was sixth (23.94) and Strumbel eighth (24.04).

Ress was just out-touched in the 100 backstroke final, taking second in 55.67. Wohrley was fifth (55.63) and Pammett seventh (56.75). It was a 3-4 finish for IU in the 200 breaststroke with Allysa Vavra third (2:17.32) and Pasloski fourth (2:19.82).

Allie Day was top Hoosier in the 100 fly, coming in fifth (56.82), while Kim Tracey was seventh (57.08) and Ress ninth (57.77).

Indiana took three of the top five spots in the 200-yard freestyle race as Farrell took second in 1:49.11. That was followed by Strumbel in third (1:49.23) and Vrooman in fifth (1:50.56).

After last night's win in the 200 individual medley, Vavra made it a sweep with a victory in the 400 IM Saturday, taking the title in 4:16.80, almost than three seconds faster than the NCAA B standard. Dorina Szekeres was ninth (4:26.42) and Tracey 10th (4:27.11).

In the final swimming event of the day, Indiana took third in the 400 freestyle relay as Farrell, Armstrong, Schaefer and Strumbel finished in 3:29.60.

For the second time in as many days, the Hoosiers swept the top three spots in the diving competition, this time going 1-2-3 on the 1-meter springboard. Gabby Agostino was first with 273.70 points, while Kathryn Connolly was second (272.60) and Kate Hillman third (262.20).
