Wisconsin Press Release

The Wisconsin swimming and diving program welcomed Indiana and Notre Dame to the UW Natatorium for a tri-dual meet Friday night, as the Badgers ended the first day of competition in front of Notre Dame and within striking distance of Indiana.

The UW men finished the first night with a 136-50 edge over Notre Dame and behind Indiana, 115-71. The UW women tallied a 123-63 lead over Notre Dame and ended just behind Indiana, 102-81.

“I thought we swam really well,” UW head coach Whitney Hite said. “Indiana does a great job and you know what you’re going to get, which is tough races that really help us prepare for the next step. Notre Dame beat us last year, both our men and our women, so we can’t sleep on them. They’ve got one of the best breaststrokers in the world on the women’s side, while their men’s team is up-and-coming.

“I really like the way we competed and the medley relay really put us off with a good start.”

The women’s 200-yard medley relay team of Annie Tamblyn, Anna Meinholz, Ivy Martin and Chase Kinney made a statement in the meet’s first event, cruising to a first-place finish with a time of one minute, 50.55 seconds.

Representing the men were Drew teDuits, Nick Schafer, Cannon Clifton and Damon Zito, who teamed up to place second in 1:30.43.

Martin rewrote the pool record board yet again this season in the 50-yard freestyle, breaking her record set against Northwestern last season by finishing Friday with a time of 22.27. The senior captain and Madison native has yet to lose the event when competing in it this season.

Not far behind Martin was junior and Ann Arbor, Michigan, native Tamblyn, who touched second in 23.56. Cannon Clifton’s time of 20.72 earned second place, while Zito picked up third with a time of 20.95.

Sophomore Matthew Hutchins continued to dominate in the distance events, winning the 1000-yard freestyle in 9:06.13, a new personal record and less than a second off from the pool record. Newcomer Danielle Valley touched second for the women in 9:51.22, while Jenny Holtzen’s time of 9:59.63 placed her fourth.

With a time of 55.21, senior captain Schafer brought home another individual victory to Wisconsin in the 100-yard breaststroke. Meinholz placed second in 1:03.60 and Maria Carlson picked up third place with a time of 1:04.18.

In the 200-yard individual medley, the duo of Brett Pinfold and teDuits captured both first and second place. Pinfold won with a time of 1:50.40, while teDuits touched in 1:50.58. Van Hout placed second with a time of 2:02.46.

Both the men’s and women’s teams finished the night with a second-place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay. Martin, Van Hout, Valley and Caroline Palm combined to touch in 7:20.16, while Nick Caldwell, Pinfold, Clifton and Hutchins finished with a time of 6:35.45.

“We’re down a little bit, so we’ve got some work to do,” Hite said of Saturday’s final day of competition. “We’re just going to have to take it race by race. I know that the kids will give it their all.

“This is a good meet for us at a good time of the year and it sets us up well for the next couple of weeks.”

The final day of swimming events begins Saturday at 10 a.m. (CT) inside the UW Natatorium.
