Indiana Adds Three Men

BLOOMINGTON, Indiana, December 21. INDIANA’s men’s swimming team has added three student-athletes to its list of signees for the 2007-08 season, head coach Ray Looze announced Thursday, Dec. 21.

Bart Ginocchio (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier), Tyler Lemert (Fort Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran) and Doug Spraul (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) will all join the Hoosier program next season.

Ginocchio is a seven-time All-American for St. Xavier High School, taking the honor for the 200-yard freestyle, 500-yard freestyle and 400-yard freestyle relay in both 2005 and 2006. He also earned All-America consideration in the 500 free in 2004. Ginocchio has helped St. Xavier to three state titles in as many seasons, running the school’s streak to eight consecutive state championships. Ginocchio was the state runner-up in the 500 free in 2006 and finished fourth in the 200 free. He helped the 400 free relay squad to a first-place finish in 2006 after a runner-up showing in 2005.

“Bart’s one of the top freestylers out of the state of Ohio,” Looze said. “He’s a part of the St. Xavier High School swimming program, and it’s arguably the finest high school program history-wise in the country. They’ve won numerous state titles and he’s one of the leaders on that team. We feel Bart will help us score in at least two things in the Big Ten as a freshman and has tremendous upside, not only in his potential in the water in the middle distance to distance freestyle, but also in leadership.”

Lemert is a seven-time All-American for Concordia Lutheran, having earned the distinction in the 100-yard breaststroke in 2004, 2005 and 2006. Lemert also earned All-America status in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 2004 and 2005, the 200-yard medley relay in 2004 and the 50-yard freestyle and 200-yard individual medley in 2006. In 2005, Lemert posted the second-fastest time in the nation in the 100 breast. He has posted six top-four finishes in the state throughout his career, winning the 200 free relay in 2005, finishing second in the 100 breast in 2006, taking third in the 200 IM in 2006 and in the 100 breast and 200 medley relay in 2005 and claiming fourth in the 200 medley relay in 2004.

“Tyler Lemert, from Fort Wayne, is the leading returner in the breaststroke in the state of Indiana,” Looze said. “He has a real good shot to win the state title in the 100-yard breaststroke and even break the record, which has been a long-standing one. He’s started off the season just outstandingly. Tyler’s going to be a guy that will help us maintain our excellence in breaststroke, which we’ve been fortunate enough to have the past few years here at IU.”

Spraul earned All-America distinction in the 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard backstroke for Princeton High School in 2006, turning in the 19th-best time in the nation in the 100 back. A five-time Greater Miami Conference champion, Spraul holds league records in both the 100 fly and 100 back and owns six school records. Spraul was named the GMC Swimmer of the Meet in 2006 and is a Junior National and U.S. Open qualifier. Also a three-year letterwinner in water polo for Princeton, Spraul helped the team to a regional championship in 2005.

“Doug Spraul is from the Cincinnati area, as well as Bart,” Looze said. “Doug swims on the same club team as Bart Ginocchio, the Cincinnati Marlins. In my opinion, Doug is one of the best-kept secrets in this class. He’s going to be a fantastic backstroker and butterflyer. He’s probably got some of the best underwater kickouts, which has become a real important tool to have in backstroke and certainly as well as butterfly. We feel when a guy like (current Indiana junior) Ben Hesen does graduate, a guy like Doug Spraul will be ready to go to keep the fine tradition of backstroke excellence that we’ve had here the past couple of years. And both Doug and Bart are just outstanding students, as well.”

Ginocchio, Lemert and Spraul join swimmers Jesse Cohen (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes), Titus Knight (Austin, Texas/James Bowie) and Cody Weik (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) and divers Scott Berger (Carmel, Ind./Carmel), Nick Foulks (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) and Kris Hill (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) in the Hoosiers’ 2007-08 recruiting class.
