Indian River, Florida A&M vs. Florida State

TALLAHASSEE, Florida, November 1. THE Florida State swimming and diving team defeated Indian River State College and Florida A&M on Saturday morning at the Morcom Aquatic Center. The men defeated the Indians 181-114 and the Rattlers 217-26. The Women were victorious over IRSC 208-82 and FAMU 213-11.

"I think the team did well especially during this heavy training phase," FSU head coach Neil Harper said. "You always worry about how hard you work them and how hard you can beat them up, but Indian River is a good team and Florida A&M has some good athletes, but our team got after it and performed well."

The Seminole men (5-0,1-0), were led by redshirt senior Kyle Young who won three events for FSU. Young began the day with a win in the 200 free (1:40.49) then he won the 500 free (4:31.86) and finished the meet with a victory in the 400 individual medley (4:02.97). Junior Andy Hodgson and senior diver Scott Derner also took home two event titles. Hodgson swept the backstroke events winning the 100 (50.09) and 200 (1:47.80) and Derner won the one-meter (339.90) and three-meter (372.00) diving competitions.

"Today went really well," Derner said. "Coming off of a lot of training everyone is kind of broken down. To be able to come out and perform like I did is great."

The women (7-1, 2-0) had four multiple event winners on the day. Junior Tiffany Elias won the 1000 free (10:28.61) and the 200 fly (2:06.44), sophomore C.J. Hendry won the 100 back (59.19) and 100 fly (57.01), sophomore Jocelyn Phillips was victorious in the 200 free (1:52.18) and 500 free (4:59.12) and freshman Jessica Sabotin won the 200 breast (2:25.05) and 400 individual medley (4:29.33).

"I think we've got some great athletes and some great depth," Harper said. "Our kids are racing each other, but they realize that these teams have some athletes and they did a good job of not focusing on individual results knowing we have to win as a team.

Florida State now enters its most difficult stretch of the season with meets against Penn St., Virginia and Florida. In order for the Seminoles to be at their best the must focus on these next few weeks of training.

"I think that we've got some tough opponents on the horizon and we've got to be able to race tired," Harper said. "All three teams are ranked above us and we've got to be at our best and demand more from our kids."
