Ieva Maluka Wins Three Times as Arizona State Routs Utah

Ieva Maluka led Arizona State with three wins as the Sun Devils handled Utah in a Monday morning dual meet.

The Sun Devils romped to wins on both sides, the men by a 232-66 score and the women by a 210.5-88.5 margin, even in a meet without Leon Marchand.

Maluka, the Latvian international, clocked in at 1:46.04 in the 200 freestyle, 49.58 in the 100 free and 1:56.97 in the 200 individual medley. She also led off the winning 200 medley relay, teaming with Zoe Summar, Lindsay Looney and Erin Milligan to go 1:39.51.

Summar swept breaststroke. Looney went 1:56.18 to dominate the 200 butterfly and 53.69 in the 100 to edge 100 backstroke champ Katrina Marty. Deniz Ertan did the distance double in the 1,000 and 500 free, with Alexa Reyna second and third, respectively. Milligan, Looney, Molly Batchelor and Elli Straume clocked in at 3:18.66 in the 400 free relay.

Erin Palmer earned Utah a win on the women’s side by going 22.93 to capture the 50 free. Norah Hay went 1:57.05 to win the 200 back, .05 up on teammate Summer Stanfield, who had been third in the 200 free and 200 IM. Kathryn Grant swept diving, scoring 308.70 on 1-meter and 287.73 on 3-meter.

On the men’s side, Patrick Sammon was the freestyle winner of the day, claiming the 100 and 200. He went 1:34.27 in the 200 to edge Julian Hill by a half-second, then 43.63 to best Cam Peel by two tenths. Sammon’s split of 42.56 was the fastest of the winning 400 free relay, joining Jack Dolan, Peel and Owen McDonald to go 2:50.96.

Dolan, John Heaphy, Ilya Kharun and Jonny Kulow won the 200 medley relay in 1:23.21 to kick off the meet.

McDonald swept backstroke, winning the 100 in 45.69 and the 200 in 1:42.18. Jack Wadsworth was second in both. Kharun won the 200 fly in 1:39.31, five seconds quicker than runner-up Alex Colson. Kharun also won the 200 IM in 1:43.51 to outduel David Schlicht, who had swept the breaststroke events.

Daniel Matheson won the 1,000 free in 9:05.39 and was second to Hill by .10 seconds in the 500 free, Hill winning in 4:23.17. Hubert Kos went 45.69 to win the 100 fly over Dolan.

Utah’s Brandon Miller was second in the 1,000 free and third in the 200 back. Elias Petersen won both diving events for the Utes, scoring 348.98 on 1-meter and 378.60 on 3-meter.
