Husky Invitational

STORRS, Connecticut, October 11. THE University of Connecticut men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams opened its seasons on Saturday by both taking first place finishes at the Husky Invitational held at the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium.

The UConn women scored 983 points in their meet to top Seton Hall with 534 and Stony Brook with 379. The Husky men had 763 points followed by Seton Hall with 700 and Stony Brook with 385.

The Husky women were led by three swimmers who were coming off injuries last year. Senior Katie DeVinney (Avondale, Ariz.) had knee surgery last year and won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:06.43 and the 100-yard butterfly in 58.73 seconds.

Sophomore Katie Tice (Aberdeen, N.J.) had ear surgery last year and competed well in the butterfly events on Saturday. Finally, senior Danielle Sanders (Mississug, Ont.) was coming off shoulder surgery and performed well in the backstrokes.

The women still have two other important performers that are rehabilitating injuries in senior Lisa Shelps (Quakertown, Pa.) and sophomore Carlyn Lungmus (Sarasota, Fla.).

The UConn women picked up victories from a number of its talented freshmen today. Erin DeVinney (Avondale, Ariz.) won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:56.90 and the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:37.60. Anna Drinka (San Antonio, Texas) won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.74 while Ye Ling (Lake Worth, Fla.) won the 50-yard freestyle in 24.52.

Marta Kot (Ostroleka, Poland) won the 400-yard IM in 4:40.01 and Samantha Cisneros (Garden Grove, Calif.) won the 100-yard freestyle in 55.01.

The Husky men were led by senior Adrian Astiz (Rocville, Md.) with a win the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 1:50.85 and the 100-yard butterly in 50.28 seconds.

Sophomore Alex Davidson (Pointe Claire, Que.) won the 100-yard backstroke in 52.11 and the 200-yard backstroke in 1:54.03.

Freshman Mitch Dansky (Winchendon, Mass.) won the 1,000-yard freestyle in his first collegiate meet in a time of 9:48.72.

The UConn men and women both return to action next when Boston College comes to town for a 1:00 p.m. meet
