Hurricanes Name Aaron Ciarla Associate Head Coach

CORAL GABLES, Florida, April 17. AARON Ciarla has been named associate head coach of the University of Miami swimming program, as announced by head coach Christie Shefchunas Wednesday.

“I feel very blessed to have him here,” Shefchunas said of Ciarla. “He is not only in my eyes one of the best coaches in the world, but he's just a good man. We're incredibly fortunate to have him.”

Ciarla, who was originally brought onto the staff in June of 2011, helped guide the swimming team to one of its most successful seasons in recent memory this past year. After earning gold medals in the Atlantic Coast Conference championships, the team had two swimmers (Kelsi Hall and Sofia Johansson) compete at the NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships in Auburn, Ala.

“I want to thank Christie, Shawn Eichorst, Connie Nickel, and Randy Ableman for allowing me to be a part of the program here,” Ciarla said. “This university is simply phenomenal. I'm lucky to be a part of it, and I never take it for granted.”

Ciarla said that before his first season in Coral Gables, he and Coach Shefchunas put their brains together during the summer months to develop new ways to best challenge the team. The brainstorming paid off for the university's swimming program and its individual student-athletes, as Hall became the program's first All-American swimmer since 2002 and Johansson shattered the conference record for the 100-yard breaststroke.

“He's a great example for these kids. He keeps everybody laughing, but at the same time focused,” Shefchunas said of Ciarla. “He's a dream.”

For the Charlotte, N.C. native, thinking about his future in Coral Gables as a partner in the USwimming program brings nothing but excitement.

“I was honored that Christie thought so highly of me to be a partner.” Ciarla said. “We have such a great relationship, trust and faith in each other, and I'm looking forward to building on something special here at Miami. There's no place like this in the world.”
