Houston vs. Oakland

ROCHESTER, Michigan, November 1. THE University of Houston swimming and diving team defeated Oakland University 133-110 in a dual meet Saturday afternoon in the second meet in as many days for the Cougars.

At the meet, junior Anastasia Pozdniakova set the OU Aquatic Center record in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. She won the 1-meter event scoring 375.67 points and then took top honors in the 3-meter competition with 396.07 points.

In the 100-yard butterfly event, senior Sasha Schwendenwein took a convincing first place finish of 55.13. Her time currently ranks as the fourth best time in school history. She was followed in second by senior Doreen Polotzek with a time of 59.62.

Schwendenwein took home her second win of the afternoon with a first place time of 5:03.69 the 500-yard freestyle. Freshman Olga Bordatcheva finished third (5:13.66), while freshman Rachel Holcomb was sixth (5:38.38) and sophomore Markee Johnson was seventh (6:03.34).

Despite a second place finish in the 100-yard backstroke, junior Jessica Shambuger's finish of 57.30 ranks fourth best time performance in school history. Also in the race, sophomore Paige Bissett finished third (1:01.09), freshman Rachel Johnson was sixth (1:05.36), while sophmore Amber Brodeur was seventh (1:06.22).

Freshman Beccy Hillis also broke into the Cougar record books with her second place time of 1:05.43 in the 100-yard breaststroke. The time ranks as the eighth best performance in school history. Polotzek and freshman Natalie Newcomb added fifth and sixth place finishes.

Senior Andrea Pa'lmai won the 1,000-yard freestyle event with a time of 10:18.27. Teammates Newcomb and Markee Johnson joined her finishing fourth and sixth, respectively. After winning the 1,000-yard freestyle event, Pal'mai went on to win 400-yard IM event with a time of 4:29.86. Hillis followed in second (4:35.35), while Newcomb was fifth (4:42.70).

Freshman Kimberley Eeson won the 200-yard freestyle event with a time of 1:52.62, while Bordatcheva added a fourth place finish (1:58.32). Holcomb and Brodeur followed in sixth and seventh place.

Eeson won her second event of the day with a 52.56 finish in the 100-yard freestyle. Sophomore Brittany Copeland added a fifth place finish (55.38), while freshman Anne Stone was seventh (59.53).

In the 50-yard freestyle event, Copeland finished fourth with a time of 25.16, while sophomore Paige Bissett was fifth (25.29) and Stone was seventh (27.12).

In the relay events, Houston won the 400-yard freestyle relay. Schwendenwein, Pa'lmai, Copeland and Eeson combined to finish with a first place time of 3:32.81. Houston's `B' team of Shamburger, Bordatcheva, Markee Johnson and Rachel Johnson finished fourth with a time of 3:45.52.

Houston also took second place in the 400-yard medley relay. Shamburger, Hillis, Polotzek and Bissett combined to finish the race with a time of 3:57.69. The Cougars' `B' team of Amber Brodeur, Rachel Johnson, Anne Stone and Rachel Holcomb finished fifth with a time of 4:34.92.

After Pozdniakova won both diving events, the rest of the team followed close behind with the Cougars taking the top three spots in both events. Sophomore Lacey Truelove finished second in the 1-meter competition with 280.27 points. Sophomore Courtney Forcucci finished third (270.30 points) and freshman Jessalyn Almond was fourth (264.07).

Truelove followed up her second place finish in the 1-meter competition with another second place finish in the 3-meter competition with 283.27 points. In addition, Almond was third (278.92) and Forcucci was fifth (242.02).

Houston is 3-1 this season in dual meets.

Houston will return home for a meet against Rice and New Mexico State on Nov. 6. The Cougars will then host the Phill Hansel Dual Meet Weekend featuring Rice, Incarnate Word, Florida International and Vanderbilt on Nov. 14-15.
