NEW YORK, N.Y. — On Wednesday, the Women’s Sports Foundation announced former North Carolina swimmer Hellen Moffitt (Class of 2017) as one of 19 recipients of a 2018 Travel and Training Fund grant. The foundation awarded a total of $72,000 to 17 athletes and two teams to support the athletes’ pursuits of international athletic greatness as they train for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, World Championships, and more.

During Moffitt’s time at Carolina, she swam her way into the Tar Heel record book in numerous events. A current member of the USA Swimming National Team, Moffitt still holds the top times in the women’s 100-yard backstroke (50.94), 200-yard backstroke (1:51.64), and 100-yard butterfly (50.37) which she set all in her senior season. She set a new Carolina long course record time of 58.15 in the 100-yard butterfly at the 2018 U.S. Nationals and still ranks first in UNC history in the 50-yard butterfly after swimming the event in 26.19 at the 2017 U.S. National Championships. Moffitt also received a Rammy for Record-Breaking Performance following her double All-America day at the 2017 NCAA Championships and earned the 2017 Richard E. Jamerson ‘Most Outstanding Swimmer’ team award.

Moffitt continues to find success in the pool following her collegiate career. In 2017, she won gold at both the FINA Short Course World Championships and the World University Games. Her primary goal for 2018 is to medal at the Pan Pacific Championships, and she ultimately hopes to qualify for the 2020 and 2024 Olympic Games. The Travel & Training Fund grant will help Hellen take time off of her job and focus on swimming full-time. The money will be used to fund monthly coaching costs, strength-training costs and travel expenses that are not covered by her sport’s national governing body.
