Penny Oleksiak, the co-Olympic gold medalist in the women’s 100 free from Rio and the silver medalist in the 100 fly, was entered in the meet but ended up scratching, but that still leaves four Olympic gold medalists from one of the past three Olympics as the top seeds in their respective events.
That list includes Simone Manuel (who tied Oleksiak) in the women’s 100 free and Katie Ledecky in the women’s 400 free as winners from the 2016 Games, Nathan Adrian in the men’s 100 free as a winner from the 2012 Olympics and Park Tae Hwan, the 2008 Olympic gold medalist in the men’s 400 free, as the top seed in that event.
Also on the slate will be the 100 fly, which features short course American record-holder Kelsi Worrell in the women’s event and a loaded field led by Olympic finalist Tom Shields in the men’s race, as well as the 200 breast.
The top six seeds in the women’s 200 breast — all potential winners Friday night — include Kierra Smith, Katie Meili, Lilly King, Bethany Galat, Molly Hannis and Melanie Margalis. 2015 World Champs runner-up Kevin Cordes highlights the men’s 200 breast.
Full live coverage of the meet will be available during the session.
