The eighth morning of prelims will feature a short schedule with only four events (two individual, two relay) swimming.

The men’s 400 IM will see IM greats Chase Kalisz and Daiya Seto return as the top two seeds. Earlier in the World Championships, Seto broke the United States’ stranglehold on the 200 IM when he became the first non-American to win gold for the first time since 2001. The United States has not had the same stranglehold on the 400 IM, in fact, prior to Kalisz winning in 2017, Seto was the 2013 and 2015 World Champion and will surely use his 200 IM victory to propel himself towards another victory.

Only three heats of the women’s 400 IM will compete with defending World Champion Katinka Hosszu headling the event. Hosszu has won the 400 IM title an astounding four times (2009, 2013, 2015, 2017) and could very easiliy make 2019 a fifth.

The morning will conclude with the men’s and women’s 400 medley relay. On the men’s side, China and Japan hold the top seeds going into prelims, while Australia and the United States hold the top seeds on the women’s side.
