Hathaway, Suguiyama, Spoon Earn ACC Swimmer of the Week Honors

NORTH Carolina junior Katie Hathaway has won the ACC women's Swimmer of the Week honor, while North Carolina's Yuri Suguiyama and Duke's Ryan Spoon share the men's honor. All three individuals turned in strong performances at the Nike Cup, held at Koury Natatorium on the UNC campus last week.

Hathaway, a junior from Matthews, N.C., won three individual titles as she led the Tar Heels to a first-place finish. She took the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:02.27 and won the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:14.20. Hathaway also won the 400-yard individual medley in a time of 4:15.25. All three performances were seasonal bests for her. Hathaway was also a member of five relay teams, all of which won first place. The 200-yard freestyle relay team won in 1:33.92, the 400-yard freestyle relay won in 3:27.32 and the 800-yard freestyle relay won in 7:24.90. In addition, the 200-yard medley relay team won in 1:43.09, while the 400-yard medley team won in 3:45.00.

Suguiyama won first place in two Nike Cup events. He swam a career-best 15:25.44 in the 1650 yd freestyle. In addition, Suguiyama also won the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 4:26.46. Suguiyama also won ACC Swimmer of the Week on November 6.

Spoon was Duke's outstanding swimmer at the NIKE Cup, placing fourth in the A Final of the 200 breaststroke (2:03.18) and third in the B Final of the 100 breaststroke (57.15).
