Hansen Joins the Push Against Prostate Cancer

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, November 11. LIKE many men in the United States and around the world, Brendan Hansen is taking part in Movember, a fundraising initiative in which men grow mustaches to raise awareness of cancers that affect men, specifically prostate cancer. Hansen's father, Buzz, beat prostate cancer and his son, a four-time Olympic medalist, has thrown his support behind the movement.

Competing in the Minnesota Grand Prix, which kicks off the United States Swimming Grand Prix Circuit, Hansen is two weeks into growing his mustache. He's contesting the 100 and 200 breaststroke events this weekend and using the meet as preparation for a push toward a third Olympic Team berth. Hansen recently came out of retirement to make a run at the London Games.

"My dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer three years ago and if it wasn't for early detection, he would have had a much harder time with it," Hansen said. "I'm very proud of the way he handled the whole situation and to support him I've grown a mustache for Movember to raise awareness. Let me rephrase: Attempt to grow a mustache. It's the thought that counts, right?"
