Michigan Women’s Press Release

The University of Michigan women’s swimming and diving team began the 2014-15 campaign Friday (Oct. 3) with some strong first impressions from its freshman class, jumping to leads over Big Ten foes Iowa and Nebraska in day one of a two-day meet that featured mostly exhibitions at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Pool.

The meet resumes Saturday with the Wolverines holding a 28-10 edge over the Hawkeyes and a 25-13 lead over the Cornhuskers.

In one of the two scoring events tonight, freshman Hannah Moore (Cary, N.C./Green Hope) dominated the field in the 1,000-yard freestyle. She clocked in at 9:44.40, more than five seconds faster than Iowa’s second-place finisher Becky Stoughton (9:49.51). Fellow U-M freshman Gillian Ryan (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown Area) took third (9:56.34) and senior Kelsey Cummings (El Segundo, Calif./El Segundo) took fourth (10:01.10). Moore’s time was the fastest by a Wolverine in the event since Emily Brunemann swam it in 9:43.00 on Oct. 23, 2009.

In the other scoring event of the night, one-meter diving, the Maize and Blue took second and third on the strength of veterans senior Carey Chen (Vancouver, British Columbia/University Hill Secondary) and junior Sarah Kamstra (Zeeland, Mich./Zeeland). Chen tallied a score of 275.60 and Kamstra followed closely with a mark of 270.70 — both scores are NCAA Zone diving qualifying marks. Freshman Juliette Corboy (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) finished in sixth place in her collegiate debut (256.25).

The teams also raced in five exhibition relays throughout the night, with the Wolverines taking first place in three of the races. In the opening event, U-M took first and second in the 400-yard medley relay. The team of freshmen Clara Smiddy (Miami, Fla.), Emily Kopas (Davie, Fla./University School), junior Marni Oldershaw (Oakville, Ontario/Iroquois Ridge) and sophomore Madeline Frost (Saline, Mich./Saline) paced the competition with their time of 3:45.14.

The Wolverines also claimed first in the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 100-yard freestyle relay. Smiddy was a part of all three winning relays, swimming the anchor leg in both the 200 and 100 freestyles.

The tri-meet concludes on Saturday (Oct. 4) with a full slate of events beginning at 10 a.m. CDT in Iowa City, Iowa.
