Haley Spencer Among New Record Holders at Minneapolis Sectionals

Day one of the 2015 Speedo Sectionals at Minneapolis saw a record number of meet and pool records fall.

Haley Spencer of Minnesota Aquatics succeeded in lowering her own pool and meet record in the women’s 200-meter breaststroke of 2:28.62 from 2014 with a final time of 2:28.44. Anna Meinholz of Wisconsin Aquatics took second with a 2:32.26, while teammate Jennifer Holtzen grabbed third with a 2:33.55.

Katherine Drabot of Ozaukee Aquatics claimed a new meet and pool record in the women’s 100-meter free. Drabot first broke the pool record in prelims when she posted a 55.67 before lowering her time to a 55.07 to claim both the pool and meet record. Aja Van Hout of Wisconsin Aquatics had formerly owned both records setting the meet record of 55.80 in 2014 and the pool record of 55.65 in 2013. Wisconsin Aquatics’ Chase Kinney (56.21) and Ivy Martin (56.22) were second and third respectively.

Brett Winfold of Wisconsin Aquatics took first in the men’s 100-meter free with a swift 49.99, nearing Matt Grever’s meet record of 49.87 from 2004.Teammate Cannon Clifton claimed second with a 50.02, while Daryl Turner of Minnesota Aquatics finished third with a 50.54.

The men’s 200-meter breaststroke went to Jacob Mandli of Wisconsin Aquatics who posted a winning time of 2:16.17. Jae Park of Nasa Wildcat Aquatics turned in a time of 2:1728 for second, and third went to teammate Maciej Olszewski (2:18.01).

In an astounding turn of events the top three finishers in the women’s 200-meter fly each succeeded in lowering the meet and pool record. The pool record of 2:14.39 was formerly owned by Hannah Saiz and set in 2014, while Kaia Simmons’ meet record of 2:14.20 had stood since 2007. Dana Grindall of Wisconsin Aquatics claimed the new records with a dazzling 2:12.72. Danielle Nack of Mantas Swim Club settled for second with a final time of 2:13.40, while Azra Avdic of Nasa Wildcat Aquatics took third with a time of 2:13.42.

Wisconsin Aquatics’ Harrison Tran out-touched the competition in the men’s 200-meter fly with a time of 2:03.94. Alligator Aquatics’ Sam Wilcher was a slim second with a final time of 2:03.95, while Maverick Swim Club’s Alexander Dillmann rounded out the top three with a 2:05.94.

Danielle Valley of Wisconsin Aquatics posted a winning time of 8:48.53, only 1.98 seconds off the 2014 meet and pool record of 8:46.55 set by Kirsten Jacobson in 2014. Audrey Guyett of St. Charles Swim Club finished second with a time of 8:58.97, while Springfield YMCA’s Kaitlyn Wheeler posted a final time of 9:01.02 for third.

Christopher Dawson of Club Hawkeye replaced Nicholas Caldwell’s 2014 meet and pool record of 8:18.82 with a sizzling 8:17.85. Nathan Mueller of Wisconsin Aquatics claimed second with a time of 8:24.02, while Jonathon Larson of Edina Swim Club took third with a final time of 8:26.27.
