Haiti Aquatic Federation Calls Upon Swimmers For Donations After Hurricane Matthew

It has been approximately one month since Hurricane Matthew struck the coast of Haiti and left many homeless, injured, and in dire need of assistance.

Hurricane Matthew has claimed close to 550 lives in the past month and displaced many more as damage and widespread flooding have wreaked havoc on the small country, making this the largest humanitarian emergency since the 2010 earthquake.

In the aftermath of the disaster many organizations have risen to the challenge of providing aid to the people of Haiti. One such group is the Haitian Federation of Athletics who, in partnership with the Haiti Aquatic Federation (FHSAS), are working towards building 100 small anti-seismic houses. Each house costs approximately $8,500 to build.

The Federation, a member of FINA/UANA/CCCAN since 2015, created a Go Fund Me page on November 3, 2016 and have since raised $525 of a $50,000 goal.

Drowning is the leading cause of death in Haiti with less than 1% of the population knowing how to swim. The FHSAS has since made it their mission to save lives and promote the sport of swimming. With several coaches and athletes among those who have lost their homes to Hurricane Matthew, the Federation has added the mission of providing stable homes for as many family as they can.

FHSAS has issued a call to swimmers near and far to donate and make an impact on the lives of the Haitian community.
