Gretchen Walsh, Kacper Stokowski Dominate ACC Weekly Honors

After their outstanding tri-meet this weekend, the ACC Weekly Honors unsurprisingly found their way to Virginia and NC State.

Gretchen Walsh earned the women’s nod from the conference on Tuesday after Virginia’s stirring win over NC State and the University of North Carolina, while Kacper Stokowski was recognized with the men’s honor for his efforts in NC State’s sweep of UNC and UVA. North Carolina diver Aranza Vazquez Montano and Pitt’s Dylan Reed won the women’s and men’s diving honors, respectively.

Stokowski was outstanding in Charlottesville. The grad student from Poland set two pool records, winning the 100 backstroke in 46.02 and leading off the 400 freestyle relay with a split of 44.18. The Wolfpack set a record in that event at 2:52.05. Stokowski also helped the NC State 400 medley relay down the pool mark of Texas in 2021 by two seconds in 3:07.89.

Walsh set, roughly, all of the records for the top-ranked Cavaliers. She won the 50 free in 20.98 seconds and the 100 free in 46.40. Her fly split of 21.50 in the 200 medley relay was the fastest in history, as was her 20.19 split in the 200 free relay. The junior set UVA pool records in the 100 free, the 200 free (1:26.47) and the 100 back (48.77, on the 400 medley relay). It’s her fourth swimmer of the week honor this season.

Reed, the men’s diver of the week for the fourth time this season, dove for the final time at his home Trees Pool. The fifth-year senior won the 1-meter event with a score of 400.28 points, his season-high. He won 3-meter with 427.73.

Vazquez Montano is the women’s diver of the week for the fifth time this season and, like Reed, the second straight week. The senior from Mexico won the 1-meter event in the tri-meet with NC State and Virginia, scoring 319.40 points. She was second in 3-meter thanks to a score of 321.35.
