The penultimate day of competition at the 2017 USA Diving Winter National Championships saw two synchronized pairs crowned as Grayson Campbell (Vienna, Va./University of Texas) and Greg Duncan (Oakton, Va./University of North Carolina) won the men’s synchronized 3-meter event and Olivia Rosendahl (Los Angeles, Calif./Northwestern University) and Sophia McAfee (San Marino, Calif./Trojan Dive Club) took first in the women’s 10-meter contest Monday at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

Campbell and Duncan entered the final as the top seed after totaling 378.81 points in the morning preliminary. The duo pressed on in the final by adding 393.18 points to finish atop the podium at 771.99.

“This feels awesome,” Campbell said. “It’s really fun when I’m with one of my best friends. We grew up together in the same town, so it’s real special to win a first national synchro title with him. Couldn’t be happier.”

The duo crafted three dives of 40.00 or more points in the final, including a forward 3½ somersault pike in round three that earned 42.00 points for their highest-scoring dive of the day. Briadam Herrera (Miami, Fla./University of Miami) and Joey Cifelli (Chicago Heights, Ill./Purdue University) took second at 753.90 points, while Dash Enos (Studio City, Calif./University of Southern California) and Henry Fusaro (Scottsdale, Ariz./University of Southern California) secured bronze with 730.02 points.

The women’s field consisted of two synchronized pairs, but Rosendahl and McAfee did not hold back as they totaled 257.28 points in the preliminary. They went on to hit a total score of 549.00 points for gold, with Christy Cutshaw (Durham, N.C./University of Michigan) and Julia Wortman (Wellington, Fla./Coral Springs Diving) taking silver at 440.04 points.

“This is really exciting because we defended our title from last year,” Rosendahl noted. Rosendahl and McAfee finished first in the event at the 2016 USA Diving Winter National Championships with a score of 510.36 points, improving their score by 38.64 points at the 2017 edition.

The 2017 USA Diving Winter National Championships finishes tomorrow in Greensboro, N.C. at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. The final day of competition includes the women’s synchronized 3-meter preliminary and final and the men’s synchronized 10-meter preliminary and final.
