Goodwill Games: US Women Beat Europe 82-67; Men Fall to Australia 93.5-55.5

BRISBANE, Australia. Aug. 29. THE US women won 10 events and posted nine second- and nine third-place finishes to defeat the European All-Stars, 82-67, in the opening dual meet of the Goodwill Games swimming competition at the Chandler Aquatic Centre in Cleveland, a suburb of Brisbane.

The American men's team, disadvantaged by the absence of many of its top stars, fell to arch-rival Australia, 93.5-55.5.

In other action, Australia's women trounced the World All-Stars, 96-53, while the World All-Star men's team disposed of the Europeans, 85-64.

Women: USA 82, Europe 67
"We're just ecstatic to win," said US women's head coach Dick Shoulberg. "We felt that the European All-Stars was the best team here. We swam tough. We got the third-place finishes where we needed them and got the first- and second-place finishes, too. It was a balanced lineup. We're glad to get the first victory. Now we'll relax a little better and get ready for tomorrow's meet against Australia.

"It will be a tough meet. They have the same type of team camaradie we have and they'll have a big crowd cheering for them. It will be a fun meet."

The score of the meet is deceptive. The meet is scored 5-3-1 in individual events — 5 points for first place, 3 for second and 1 for third; relays are scored 7-0. With one event to go, the 400 free relay, the US had an insurmountable 8-point lead, 75-67. In the final event, the Euros made only a half-hearted effort as the US won an easy victory.

Europe jumped out to an early lead, winning the opening event, the 400m medley relay, 4:07.26 to 4:08.54 to take a 7-0 lead in the meet.

The U.S. rallied quickly though, winning the next three events, including a 1-2 finish by Haley Cope and Diana MacManus in the 100m back. At that point, the score stood 20-14 in the Americans' favor.

The European All-Stars pulled even two events later when Anna-Karin Kammerling and Inge de Bruijn took the 50m fly and 50m free. Amy Field and Staciana Stitts put the U.S. back on top with an upset 1-2 sweep in the 100m breast.

The Americans held the lead through the next two events with wins by Emily Mason (200m fly) and a third-place finish in the 100m free by Colleen Lanne. Antje Buschschulte won the 200m back, but second- and third-place finishes by MacManus and Lauren Gettel kept the U.S. in it, tying the score at 44.

A 1-2 finish for Europe in the 100m fly by Otylia Jedrzejczak and Mette Jacobsen gave the All-Stars a 60-55 lead, but the U.S. again rallied to post back-to-back 1-2 finishes in the 50m back (Cope and MacManus) and 50m breast (Field and Stitts).

With two events left, the U.S. led 71-62. All that was needed for the Americans to clinch the victory was a win or a 2-3 finish in the 200m IM, the next-to-last event of the meet. Gabrielle Rose and Leslie Lunsmann came through at second and third behind Olympic gold medalist Yana Klochkova to give the U.S. the win. The Americans capped the meet off by winning the final event, the 400m free relay.

Double individual wins were posted by Kristen Caverly (200m breast, 400m IM), Haley Cope (50m, 100m back) and Amy Field (50m, 100m breast). Lindsay Benko and Emily Mason grabbed wins in the 200m free and 200m fly, respectively.

Adrienne Binder took the first US medal of the Games, earning a bronze in the 800m free, an event only contested once at this competition. Binder hung with Klochkova for most of the race, leading at the 700m mark, 7:36.20 to 7:36.36, before the Olympic gold medalist in the two medleys pulled ahead to win 8:38.51 to 8:40.00, a lifetime best for Binder.

Men: Australia 93.5, USA 55.5
Australia had no trouble eliminating an under-manned US men's team, taking 11 of the 17 events contested.

The Aussies jumped out to a 7-0 win by taking the 400 medley relay in 3:38.26 and never looked back. But though the US went down, it went down fighting.

Tom Wilkens (4:18.72) and Eric Donnelly (4:21.38) went 1-3 in the 400 IM, closing the gap to 10-6. But — no surprise — Ian Thorpe (1:48.34) and Grant Hackett (1:48.82) went 1-2 in the 200 free to give the Aussies an 18-7 lead.

Dan Wescott went a lifetime best 55.58 and Jayme Cramer clocked 56.34 for a stunning 1-2 upset in the 100 back to bring the US to within 4 points, 19-15. But they never got closer.

Geoff Huegill (23.79) and Adam Pine (24.23) 1-2'd the 50 fly, then Ashley Callus won the 50 free (22.52) in a race that saw 14-hundredths of a second separate all four finishers.

The best swim of the meet was Tom Malchow's 1:55.27 — only .69 off the world record — for a monster 4.50-second win in the 200 fly. After an unusually measured first 50, Malchow split 55.62 at the 100, then came back strong.

The Americans won six events and were second in six others, while posting eight third-place finishes.
"We saw some good stuff out of the team tonight," said men's head coach Dave Salo. "We got out-touched in some close races. There were a few mistakes here and there and some places where we can pick up points in the later meets.

"Our goal is to get to the gold medal round, and if we can do that, I think we can give Australia a run for their money. It will still be a tough meet, but we have a shot. We had some young guys step up tonight and our veterans will wake up a little bit as the week goes on. We didn't show all our cards tonight."

Dan Westcott and Jarrod Marrs each captured two wins tonight. Westcott took the 50m (25.95) and 100m back, while Marrs won the breaststroke sprints. Marrs used a brilliant turn and finish to take the 100 breast in 1:02.35, 2-hundredths ahead of Australia's Simon Cowley.

Grant Hackett coasted to a 15:01.25 win in the 1500, a gold medal event. The time was almost 26 seconds outside the world record of 14:34.56 he set at last month's world championships in Japan.

"It's been a long season and it's hard to back up time and time again," said Hackett, who also holds the Olympic, world and Commonwealth titles. "I just wanted to go out there and win the race."

Women: Australia 96, World 53
Australia, favorites to win the women's team title, won their opening match, easily whacking the World All Stars 96-53.

Under the Goodwill Games' unique format, the four teams will compete against each over the next four days before the top two swim off for the gold medal.

The Aussies took 11 of the 17 events, with triple World Championship gold medalist Petria Thomas winning two events, while Giaan Rooney took the 200m freestyle, the event in which she claimed the world title.

Men: World 85, Europe 64
Although each team is allowed 23 swimmers, the European men had only 12 at their disposal. So desperate were they that they had to coax Dutch manager Marcel Wouda out of retirement to swim the 50m breaststroke.

Even so, they were even with the World team with just three races to go before their lack of depth caused them to lose the final three events.

Next up: USA women vs. Australia, Aug. 30, 7:30 p.m. Brisbane (5:30 a.m. Eastern and Pacific Time)
