GLIAC Championships, Day Four

JENISON, Michigan, February 11. THE Wayne State University men’s and women’s teams claimed titles at the 2012 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Swimming and Diving Championships, held at the Jenison Aquatics Center in Jenison, Mich.

The WSU men outdistanced Grand Valley State University by a tally of 872-801 to win their second-straight GLIAC crown and their fifth in the last seven years. The Warrior’s women’s team won its third-straight Conference title and sixth in the last seven years. WSU recorded 923 points, beating out GVSU, which scored 599.5 points.

Wayne State’s Sean Peters claimed women’s “Coach of the Year” honors, while Grand Valley State’s Andy Boyce took home the men’s “Coach of the Year” award.

Kei Cze Prentis (Shelby Township, Mich.) of Wayne State earned the GLIAC Women’s Swimming & Diving “Freshman of Year” award, while Grand Valley State University’s Milan Medo (Bratislava, Slovakia) garnered Men’s “Freshman of the Year” accolades.

Grand Valley State senior Karen Verbrugge (Ada, Mich.) was named Women’s “Diver of the Year” after finishing first in the 3-meter competition and second in the one-meter event. Wayne State’s Dylan Szegedi (Oregon, Ohio) earned men’s “Diver of the Year” honors after placing first in the one-meter event and finished second in the 3-meter event.

University of Indianapolis junior Maura Donahue (Milan, Mich.) claimed her second straight women’s “Swimmer of the Year” title for her efforts this week. The 2010 GLIAC women’s “Freshman of the Year,” Donahue placed first in the 100 freestyle and the 200 freestyle, while anchoring the 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams at the 2012 Championships.

Wayne State University senior Andrey Seryy (Saint-Petersburg, Russia)was named men’s “Swimmer of the Year” for the second consecutive season. Seryy won the 50, 100, and 200 freestyle events, and was a member of the first-place 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams this week.
