GOSLAR, Germany, November 30. GERMANY'S Thomas Rupprath broke the 50 meter backstroke short course world record, clocking 23.23 seconds for the two-lap sprint at the German Championships on Saturday.

Rupprath, who set the time leading off Germany's 200m medley relay team, bettered the previous world mark of 23.31 set by Australia's Matt Welsh last September in Melbourne.

The 25-year-old Rupprath had bettered his own European record with a winning time of 23.34 in Friday's final.

Rupprath also holds the short course world record of 50.10 in the 100m butterfly.
