German World Championship Trials: Katharine Schiller Wins Title; Jan David Schepers, Steffen Deibler Clock Top 10s

BERLIN, Germany, June 2. The German World Championship Trials kept on rolling in Berlin as the long course meter meet featured prelim qualifying heavy action on day three. Finals are being backloaded to this weekend in favor of television broadcasts.

Katharina Schiller captured the lone individual crown up for grabs on day three with a 4:46.08 to win the women's 400 IM. Nina Schiffer finished second in 4:50.54, while Theresa Michalak snared third in 4:51.60.

Jan David Schepers vaulted into sixth in the world in the men's 200 IM with a prelim time of 1:59.02, just off Yannick Lebherz's German record of 1:58.94 from the 2009 World Championships. Markus Deibler touched second in 2:02.74, while Dimitri Colupaev earned third in 2:03.03.

Steffen Deibler launched into seventh in the rankings with a 52.32 in men's 100 fly qualifying. Benjamin Starke finished second in 52.36 for an eighth-ranked tie with Geoff Heugill. Hannes Heyl posted a third-seeded 53.56.

Silke Lippok led the way in the women's 200 free prelims with a top time of 1:57.42. That swim pushed her to 11th in the world rankings. Britta Steffen qualified second in 1:59.25, while Annika Bruhn touched third in 2:00.38.

Lebherz grabbed 15th in the world rankings in the men's 200 back with a 1:58.61, while Lucien Hasdenteufel touched second in 2:01.20. Helge Meeuw qualified third in 2:02.40.

Tim Wallburger improved to 21st in the world rankings in the men's 200 free with a top-seeded time of 1:48.34 in prelims. Paul Biedermann finished second in 1:48.36 for 24th, while Markus Deibler took third in 1:48.78.

Meeuw also took 21st in the world, with a 25.48 in the men's 50 back qualifying. Christian Diener placed second in 25.67, while Stefan Herbst wound up third in 25.68. Jan-Philip Glania also cleared 26 with a fourth-seeded 25.97.

Christin Zenner hit the wall in 29.36 for the top seed in the women's 50 back. Jenny Mensing took second in 29.37, while Lippok placed third in 29.44. Mensing returned in the women's 200 back with a 2:12.54 for the top seed. Lippok qualified second with a 2:14.68 as part of a busy day of swimming, while Zenner wound up third in 2:15.27.

Sina Sutter clocked a 59.69 to qualify first in the women's 100 fly, while Michalak posted a second-seeded 59.85. Alexandra Wenk qualified third in 1:00.00.
