German Short Course Nationals: Christian Diener Breaks Into Top 10

WUPPERTAL, Germany, November 26. THE third night of swimming at the German Short Course Nationals featured a truckload of top-25 times, while a pair of German age group records also took a tumble.

Christian Diener blasted the men's 200 back with a victorious time of 1:51.99. That swim cut more than a second from his 10th-ranked season best of 1:53.16, and shot him up to seventh in the world rankings. Yannick Lebherz raced to second in 1:52.37 for ninth in the world, while Jan-Philip Glania's third-place 1:52.48 put him 10th.

Dorothea Brandt triumphed in the women's 50 breast with a time of 30.32, off her fourth-ranked season best of 30.18 from the Berlin stop of the World Cup. Caroline Ruhnau finished second in 30.97 for 14th in the rankings, while Sarah Poewe touched third in 31.05. Margarethe Hummel, 14, lowered the German age group record with a fourth-place 31.43.

Silke Lippok posted a swift time of 1:55.04 in the women's 200 free, moving to 10th in the world rankings. The 17-year-old downed the German age group record as well. Annika Bruhn took second in 1:57.83, while Lisa Vitting earned third in 1:58.09.

Markus Deibler nearly cracked the top 10 in the men's 100 IM with a 53.42 for the sprint medley victory. That swim vaulted him to 11th in the world rankings. Marco Di Carli placed second in 54.26 for 23rd in the rankings, while Marco Koch took third in 54.53.

Franziska Hentke raced to victory in the women's 200 fly with a 2:07.30. That effort pushed her to 13th in the world rankings. Lena Kalla placed second in 2:08.34 to take 22nd in the rankings as well. Nina Schiffer snared third-place honors in 2:11.71.

Erik Steinhagen hit the wall in 27.25 to win the men's 50 breast, jumping to 19th in the world rankings. Johannes Neumann placed second in 27.44, while Hendrik Feldwehr pocketed third in 27.50.

Katharina Schiller edged Alexandra Wenk, 2:10.75 to 2:10.99, in the women's 200 IM. Schiller moved up to 20th in the world rankings with her swim, while Wenk jumped to 25th. Alisa Riebensahm touched third in 2:12.80.

Tim Wallburger stopped the clock in 1:54.42 to win the men's 200 fly, bettering his 21st-ranked season best of 1:55.12. In the end, he jumped to 16th in the rankings. Tom Siara touched second in 1:55.38, while Robin Backhaus picked up third in 1:56.38.

Christoph Fildebrandt turned in a 47.98 to clinch the men's 100 free title. That swim pushed him to 25th in the world rankings. Di Carli earned his second podium of the night with a runner-up 48.37, while Stefan Herbst claimed third in 48.48.

Doris Eichhorn claimed the women's 50 back crown in 27.94, while Julia Leidgebel touched just behind with a second-place 27.95. Johanna Roas and Christin Zenner tied for third with matching 28.16s.

Christian Kubusch won the men's 1500 free in 14:52.55, while Manual Schwarz took second in 14:58.14. Soren Meibner wound up third in 15:02.40.

In relays, Paulina Schmeidel, Caroline Ruhnau, Sina Sutter and Lisa Vitting clocked a 1:51.11 to win the women's 200 medley relay, while Jan Konopka, Erik Steinhagen, Marius Kusch and Kevin Nguyen topped the men's 200 medley relay in 1:38.14.
