German Long Course Nationals: Paul Biedermann Doubles, Several Other Top 10 Times

BERLIN, Germany, July 3. PAUL Biedermann captured a pair of freestyle titles during the fourth day of racing at the German Long Course Nationals held in Berlin.

Biedermann snatched the men's 400 free title in 3:49.02, short of his 10th-ranked season-best effort of 3:48.77 set during the Monaco stop of the Mare Nostrum meet. Clemens Rapp finished in a close second with a 3:49.72, while Robin Backhaus claimed third in 3:53.50. Christian Kubusch just missed the podium with a fourth-place 3:53.60.

Biedermann doubled up with a victory in the men's 100 free. Biedermann hit the wall in 48.80 to move into a seventh-place tie with Liam Tancock in the world rankings. Biedermann is within striking distance of his German record of 48.39 set last year in Berlin. The Deiblers completed the rest of the podium as Steffen took second in 48.97, while Markus placed third in 49.22. Steffen jumped into 13th in the world, while Markus grabbed 21st.

Daniela Samulski captured the women's 100 free title in 54.55, edging her previous season best of 54.56 set during qualifying. She broke a tie with Daniela Schreiber for fifth in the world rankings with the effort. Schreiber settled for second in 54.73, off her top time of 54.56 also from qualifying heats this week. Lisa Vitting and Silke Lippok tied for third with matching 55.27s.

Yannick Lebherz vaulted to sixth in the world in the men's 200 back with a triumphant time of 1:58.09. Only Ryosuke Irie (1:55.11), James Goddard (1:57.06), Chris Walker-Hebborn (1:57.39), Damiano Lestingi (1:58.04) and Hayden Stoeckel (1:58.04) have been swifter this season. Felix Wolf placed a distant second in 2:00.83, while Jan-Philip Glania took third in 2:01.35.

Jenny Mensing leapfrogged from 21st in the world to 12th with a winning performance of 2:09.52 in the women's 200 back. She became just the 13th woman under 2:10 this year, moving ahead of Stephanie Proud (2:09.99). Lisa Graf (2:12.42) and Franzisca Scheiner (2:14.38) completed the top trio.

Hendrik Feldwehr moved up to 14th in the world rankings in the men's 100 breast with a winning time of 1:01.03, nearly becoming just the 13th man under 1:01 this year. Marco Koch placed second in 1:01.47, while Johannes Neumann finished third in 1:01.95.

Franziska Hentke snared 15th in the world rankings with a 2:09.17 to win the women's 200 fly. Nina Schiffer touched second in 2:11.73, while Katharina Schiller snagged third-place honors in 2:12.25.

Sarah Poewe improved to 23rd in the women's 100 breast with a 1:08.82. She moved just ahead of Megan Jendrick (1:08.83) and Rebecca Kemp (1:08.86) in the world rankings. Lina Rathsack took second in 1:10.18, while Caroline Ruhnau wound up third in 1:10.22.

Jaana Ehmcke cruised to victory in the women's 400 free with a time of 4:12.56, while Isabelle Harle pocketed second-place honors in 4:13.25. Elisa Thimm rounded out the top three in 4:13.53. Toni Embacher followed in the men's 200 fly with a top time of 1:59.48. Simon Becker placed second in 2:02.11, while Paul-Phillipp Drobny snatched third in 2:02.25.
