German Long Course Nationals: Britta Steffen Sets World Record, Two German Records Tumble

BERLIN, Germany, June 25. THE second day of swimming at the German Long Course Nationals featured some serious fireworks. On top of Britta Steffen reclaiming her world record in the women's 100 free, two German records tumbled.

Steffen turned in a time of 52.85 in prelims of the women's 100 free to break Libby Trickett's 2008 mark of 52.88. For more complete coverage of that world-record swim, click here. Incidentally, Steffen's time also beat her German record of 53.05 for progression's sake.

Two national records fell in preliminary swims. Hendrik Feldwehr turned in a 27.37 in the men's 50 breast to wipe out the 27.44 set by Mark Warnecke in 2005. Thomas Rupprath also beat a national record with a 24.73 in the men's 50 back as both he and Helge Meeuw (24.74) checked in under Rupprath's mark of 24.80 set back in 2003.

Meanwhile, Daniel Samulski qualified first in the women's 50 back with a smoking time of 27.85 that almost beat her German record of 27.83 set during the Monaco stop of the Mare Nostrum. The national record time cleared the former European record of 28.05 held by Anastasia Zueva and Sanja Jovanovic, but has not been ratified.

In finals competition, Yannick Lebherz followed his German record in the 400 IM (4:14.63) from yesterday with a winning time of 2:01.02 in the men's 200 IM. Tim Wallburger placed second in 2:02.57 with Felix Wolf finishing third in 2:02.94.

Annika Mehlhorn claimed the women's 400 IM crown in 4:43.89, while Theresa Michalak (4:44.09) and Madeleine Kraus (4:50.59) completed the top three. In another longer distance swim, Martin Grodzki won the men's 1500 free in 15:28.18. Manuel Schwarz placed second in 15:37.14, while Manuel Belzer took third in 15:39.24.

Other top qualifiers from preliminary action include Paul Biedermann in the men's 100 free (49.16), Benjamin Starke in the men's 100 fly (52.02), Mehlhorn in the women's 100 fly (59.19), Isabelle Harle in the women's 400 free (4:16.11), Kerstin Vogel in the women's 50 breast (31.08)
