Georgia’s Chris Colwill Wins 1-Meter At Zone B Championships

ATHENS, Ga, March 14. FIVE more divers guaranteed themselves a trip to the NCAA Championships with their performance at the 2004 NCAA Zone B Diving Championships at Gabrielsen Natatorium Saturday in Athens.

Georgia freshman Chris Colwill, who secured his spot on the NCAA Championship roster Friday night with a fourth-place finish on the men's 3-meter, claimed the men's 1-meter title Saturday, taking top honors with an overall score of 712.85.

Following Colwill in the event, South Carolina's Andy Bradley took second (703.70), while Jevon Tarantino of Tennessee, who won the 3-meter event Friday, placed third (700.75). Miami's Miguel Velazquez rounded out the top four with a score of 662.75.

Athens native Todd Avery took 12th in the event with a score of 597.05. The Bulldog junior will have to wait for the final results from Sunday's platform competition to know if he will be headed back to the NCAA Championships. Avery earned All-America honors a year ago at the national championship meet at Texas.

"Chris did a fantastic job," said Georgia head diving coach Dan Laak. "For him to win with this competition, especially since he did not final at SECs in this event, shows he is making progress and getting ready for NCAAs.

"Todd did a good job as well," added Laak. "He only missed one dive. Once again, we will have to wait until tomorrow to see if he will earn a spot at NCAAs."

Freshman Genya Gouzeev finished 37th for the Bulldogs with an overall score of 223.90.

Tennessee's Lauryn McCalley claimed the women's 3-meter crown with an overall score of 530.05. South Carolina's Allison Brennan took second (527.95), while Jessica Wantz of LSU finished third (512.15). Lane Bassham (509.65) and Crystal Rasmussen (502.95), both from Alabama, rounded out the top five.

Emily Hunter was Georgia's top finisher in the event, placing 20th with an overall score of 271.50. Brooke Bassham (259.65) and Sara Hershman (229.70) finished 26th and 35th, respectively.

With the competitors vying for 13 men's and 11 women's spots at NCAAs, each diver's finish will determine who will be competing at the upcoming NCAA Championships for both men and women.

During Day Two of the three-day meet, Bradley and Velazquez added their names to those traveling to the Men's NCAA Championships with top-five finishes on the 1-meter. McCalley, Wantz and Rasmussen punched their ticket to the championships with their performance on Saturday by finishing in the top five on the 3-meter.
