Georgia Tech Men Defeat Alabama, Fall to Florida State and Clemson; Women Swept in Quad Meet

ATLANTA, Georgia, October 13. NOAH Copeland scored a victory in the 200-yard men's freestyle and swam a leg of Georgia Tech's 400-yard freestyle relay to help the Yellow Jackets defeat Alabama, 162.00-138.00, but the men's team fell to Atlantic Coast Conference foes Clemson and Florida State Saturday in the team's season-opening meet at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center.

The Tigers defeated Tech's men, 166.00-130.00, while the Seminoles scored a 203.00-95.00 win. FSU also defeated Clemson and Alabama to claim a sweep of the quad meet.

Tech's women, despite a sweep of the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events by Hannah Krimm and three other individual victories, fell to all three teams in the quad meet. Clemson claimed a sweep on the women's side, defeating Tech, 185.00-113.00. The Crimson Tide's margin was 183.00-115.00.

Copeland, a junior from Fayetteville, Ga., won the 200 free in a time of 1:39.77, three seconds clear of Clemson's Dan Mengering. Junior Mickey Malul won the 100-yard breastroke in a close finish with a time of 55.94 seconds, less than a half-second ahead of FSU's Billy Jamerson.

Krimm, a sophomore from Upper Arlington, Ohio, outpointed Lauren Dunn of Alabama, 266.75-266.60, to capture the 1-meter diving, then completed the diving sweep by defeating Katie Sirounis of Florida State, 283.00-276.05.

Also on the women's side, senior Elizabeth Stowe won the 1000-yard freestyle in 10:01.64, while freshman Christine Chuang took the 200- and 100-yard butterfly in 2:03.89 and 56.50, respectively.

Tech's next action is Friday, Oct. 19, with its annual Alumni meet at the Aquatic Center, then the Yellow Jacket women travel to Fort Myers, Fla., Oct. 27 for a quad meet against Florida Gulf Coast, North Florida and Florida International. Both teams compete at home Nov. 3 against Western Kentucky.
