Georgia Diving Invite Concludes With Tower Titles
ATHENS, Georgia, January 5. EMILY Hunter of Georgia won the women's platform competition on Friday to cap the Georgia Diving Invitational And Shootout at Gabrielsen Natatorium.
Hunter, a senior from Cincinnati, had a final score of 247.90 to edge Auburn's Emily Griesemer (242.35). Hunter was Georgia's lone competitor in Friday's meet.
"(The platform) is her best event, and that's probably her best list at this time of the year," Georgia diving coach Dan Laak said. "I'm real happy with it. It's especially great since it's three weeks until the conference meet."
Hunter performed all of her dives from the 10-meter perch, although divers may also use the 5- and 7-meter platforms.
"I'm comfortable up there," Hunter said. "I got on the 10-meter when I was 10 years old, so I've been at that level the longest. Once I got past my second dive, which is the most nerve-racking of my list, I felt really good."
In the men's competition, Auburn's Steve Segerlin won with a score of 357.45. Segerlin, the 2006 NCAA champion on platform, joins Georgia's Chris Colwill as the only men to win the 1-meter, 3-meter and platform dives in the 11-year history of the Georgia Invitational. Colwill accomplished the feat last year.
