Georgia Adds Six

ATHENS, Georgia, November 16. GEORGIA picked up another six signees in the early signing period. Lauren Cartwright, Lauren English, Colleen Haase, Martin Kata, Chelsea Nauta and Courtney Monsees each signed National Letters of Intent to attend the University of Georgia.

Cartwright, a native of Fayetteville, attends Starrs Mill High School and swims for Coach Jamey Meyers on the Southern Crescent Aquatic Team. Cartwright has qualified for the Olympic Trials in the 200-meter individual medley and for the U.S. National Championship in the 100 and 200 butterfly and the 200 IM. She is one of the top 10 IM and fly prospects in the nation. Cartwright also has a 3.9 grade-point average and has been chosen as an Academic All-American.

"Lauren is a terrific athlete and a great kid," Bauerle said. "She will bring an awful lot to our program in terms of energy and attitude. She¹s an up-and-comer. She will play a very important role for us next year, and she'll help us do big things."

English is a native of Lincoln Park, N.J., where she attends Montville Township High School and swims for Coach Kathleen Ashenfelter for the Cougar Swim Club. English is the nation's top-ranked backstroker in the 18-and-under category and she is 18th in the world in the 100-meter back. English was a finalist in the 2006 Pan Pacific Games in the 100 back and has been selected as a member of the 2007 World University Games Team. She is a five-time High School All-American as well as a Scholastic All-American.

"Lauren is a terrific kid and we're excited about her joining the program," Bauerle said. "She had an amazing run this summer. She's a real up-and-comer in U.S. swimming. I think she's going to be a major player at the NCAA and international levels."

Haase hails from Rockville, Md., and attends Our Lady of Good Counsel Hope. She swims for Coach Sue Chen with the Rockville Montgomery Swim Club. Haase is the nation's top prospect in the breaststroke events, and she is an Olympic Trials qualifier in the 100- and 200-meter events. Haase also has been recognized as a Scholastic All-American.

"Colleen is a tough kid who's going to really help us out," Bauerle said. "She's got great potential in the breaststroke events, and she's going to help us fill our needs there. I feel she's going to be a big player at the next level and that she will be a formidable swimmer for us."

Kata hails from Martinez, where he attends Evans High School and swims for Coach Kristen Schlegel in the Aiken/Augusta Swim League. Kata was chosen as the Most Valuable Swimmer and the Male High-Point Winner at the Georgia Senior State Championship. He is one of the top 10 IM prospects nationally. Kata could contribute in as many as nine different events at the collegiate level.

"Martin is about as versatile as you can get," Bauerle said. "He can do just about anything you ask him to do. He's a top-flight swimmer, and we're looking forward to having him help us in many areas. We are really excited about his future in the sport."

Nauta is from Tampa, Fla., where she goes to Tampa Prep and trains with Coach Rich Rogers. Nauta is considered one of the top three middle distance freestyle prospects in the country. She is a seven-time Florida state champion. A 4.0 student, Nauta has been chosen as a Scholastic All-American. She was the captain of the 2005 United States National Junior Team and she has been invited to the 2008 Olympic Trials.

"Chelsea is one of the best recruits in the country," Bauerle said. "She's a very versatile swimmer and she's a great competitor. Chelsea is going to help us out a lot."

Monsees attends Leland High School in San Jose, Cal., and she swims for coaches Dick Jochums and John Bitter at the Santa Clara Swim Club. Monsees is one of the top five prospects in the 100-, 200- and 500-yard freestyle events. She also is a top-10 prospect in the 200 individual medley. Monsees has qualified for the 2008 Olympic Trials in the 100 and 200 free and the 200 IM events.

"We've got a lot of respect for Courtney," Bauerle said. "She's a hard-working young lady. She's very versatile and is going to help us out in a lot of places. We're not sure where she will be the best at yet, but we're sure she's got a great future."
