Georgetown vs. Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Maryland, February 5. THOUGH the snow was piling up outside, the Maryland women's swimming and diving team kept its hot streak alive, defeating Georgetown, 169.5-81.5, on Friday at Eppley Recreation Natatorium.

Maryland (11-2) celebrated its senior class of 2010 in fashion with seven individual wins coming out of this year's group. Laura Wright, Nina Rossi and Jackie Davidson each won a pair of events to lead the way for the Terps.

Wright won both the 50 free (23.45) and the 100 breast (1:05.51) as Maryland swept the top three spots in both events. Wright was followed by Ginny Glover (23.81) and Lia Reich (24.55) in the 50 free while Alexa Hamilton (1:06.71) and Ashley Cox (1:07.17) finished second and third in the 100 breast.

Rossi captured the 50 breast (30.83) and her exhibition time in the 100 IM (59.98) reigned supreme on the day. Martha VanLieshout (31.08) and Alexa Hamilton (31.15) took second and third in the 50 breast to cap another Maryland sweep.

Davidson won the 100 free (52.42) and the 50 back (27.15). Fellow classmate Rossi took second in the 100 free (52.83) and Megan Lafferty and senior Patty DeScenza (27.77) completed a Terrapin top three in the 50 back.

The Terps also took all top three spots in the 200 free as Addie Koelle (1:54.58), Erin Stout (1:54.62) and Kim Larson (1:55.68) went 1, 2, 3. Kim Larson won the 500 free (5:06.44) trailed by Stout (5:10.93) who finished second.

Glover picked up a win in the 100 back (55.43) while Sophie Allen (1:00.37) and DeScenza (1:00.54) wrapped up the sweep.

Maryland stayed consistent in one of its' best strokes – the fly. The Terps tallied the three best times in exhibition swims with Annie Fittin (25.12), senior Jen Vogel (25.67) and Jessalyn Crawford (25.74). Vogel went on to win the 100 fly (56.93) with Fittin a close second (57.62).

Alisa Kurbatova had the top scores in both the 1-meter (328.20) and 3-meter (370.20).

The Terps return to competition when they travel to Chapel Hill N.C. Feb. 17-20 for the 2010 ACC Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.

Meanwhile, the Maryland men's swimming and diving team celebrated Senior Day in style Friday, defeating Georgetown, 154-96, at Eppley Recreation Natatorium.

Maryland's senior class of 2010 racked up four individual wins including three from Aleksandar Damjanic. Damjanic captured the 100 free (46.54) and the 100 fly (49.99) and had the top time in his exhibition swim in the 200 free (1:40.14). The Terps swept both events with seniors Brian Honore and Kevin Reardon finishing second and third in the 100 free and Andrew Relihan and Honore wrapping up the top three times in the 200 free.

Senior Ryan Greene led the day off with a win in the 50 free (21.16) and was followed by Matt Gruszecki in second (21.74). Maryland also went 1-2 in the 500 free as Nick Evans won the event (4:41.36) and Graham Eve touched the wall second (4:44.25).

Andrew Fisher won both the 50 (24.80) and 100 (52.73) back. The Terps also showed its domination in the breast as Jeff Winters (26.78), Jon Szakelyhidi (27.06) and Andrew McGehee (27.11) captured the top three spots in the 50 breast while Relihan won the 100 breast (59.50) followed by Szakelyhidi in third (59.86).

The Terps also swept the top three places in both the 50 and 100 fly as Roger Dent (22.98), Sean Stewart (23.22) and Winters (23.38) tallied the best times in exhibition swims and Dent (50.96) and Stewart (51.23) followed Damjanic's first-place finish in the 100 fly.

Lorin Pierson's 100 IM exhibition time (55.51) was tops on the day followed by senior Chris Rouchard (56.13). Eric Sachs tallied the top scores on the board with a 307.50 in the 1-meter and a 286.13 in the 3-meter.

The combo of Mitch Challacombe, Winters, Damjanic and Greene captured the 200 medley relay (1:34.40).

Maryland returns to competition when it travels to Chapel Hill Feb. 24-27 for the 2010 ACC Men's Swimming and Diving Championships.
